Brainstorm~ Second Smile/ Spleigei Intercord#28596.5 Germany c.1973
Another good experimental group from Der Faderland, Brainstorm made a couple records for
Intercord here back in the early 70's. A nice mix of instrumental/vocal tapestries (the first song;
"Hirnwind" is worth the price of admission. A unique mix of light tastieries including a NEAT
Mellotron/ Flute solo and frenetic guitar part interplay with the tight vocal harmony, like a
more underscored Yes sans Squire's Rickenbacker and much more intricate harmonies. As a
matter of fact, the whole first side shows lots of influence from British groups as well as
continental flair. That first side sort of segues into more commercial sounding stuff with more
cool rhythms and vocalizing a la the Soft Machine of this period.
Seitte 2 is listenable, but to this listener doesn't hold my interest as well, and I actually dislike the
final "Marilyn Monroe" in which various old rock cliches are executed by the group (again,
seemingly aimed at the Anglo market, to not much receipt!) They may be proud of using parts
of "Kansas City" and "Route 66", but to American listeners, we were trying to get away from that
stuff SO....you make your own conclusions..The rest of the record excels in structural and tonal
quality, collectors looking for the album will be excited as my reserve is below Cosmic Guide's
US$65.00, go figure!!
Vinyle= VG++ (only slight static in quieter passages)
Cover= EX (like most in the Intercord line, high quality cover material presents close to new...
