Dieser Promo-Tonträger (auch: Promotional (Single), Weißmuster- oder Musterplatte) ist ein Tonträger (Single) der ausschließlich für Werbezwecke hergestellt wurde. Im Handel sind derartige Tonträger nicht erhältlich. Die Tonträger werden von den Plattenfirmen an ausgewählte Radiosender, Musikzeitschriften und an Fachhändler kostenlos versandt, um auf eine neue Single eines Künstlers oder einer Band aufmerksam zu machen. Um auf den Werbezweck des Tonträgers hinzuweisen, wird auf das Schallplattencover ein Hinweis ("For Promotion Only – Muster zu Ihrer Information" o. ä.) aufgedruckt. Da Promo-Tonträger nur in kleiner Auflage hergestellt werden und nicht im regulären Handel erhältlich sind, sind sie ein begehrtes Objekt für Sammler.
This promo sound carrier (also: Promotional (Single), white sample or sample record) is a sound carrier (Single) which was produced exclusively for promotional purposes. Such sound carriers are not available in stores. The sound carriers are sent by the record companies to selected radio stations, music magazines and to specialized dealers free of charge, in order to make attentive on a new single of an artist or a band. In some cases, the promos are sent out several weeks before the official sales launch of the sound carriers.
The design and also the content of the promo recordings differ from the sales copy. In order to point out the promotional purpose of the sound carrier, a note ("For Promotion Only - Sample for your information" or similar) is printed on the record cover. Since promotional records are only produced in small numbers and are not available in regular stores, they are a sought-after item for collectors.
