What happens after the disco? Sleep. Sex. Regret. Contemplation. That mix of hedonism and headiness is what we get from After the Disco, the excellent second album of collaborations between The Shins’ James Mercer and producer Danger Mouse. We’ve never heard anything as lithe and danceable from them as opening cut “Perfect World,” a massively enjoyable new-waver that perfectly sets the tone. Still, Mercer’s melody faces downward somewhat, maintaining an emotional hook within that danceability that we haven’t seen done this well since New Order. The title track lifts a hook from OMD’s “So in Love” for a typically great, knotty single from Mercer. He’s always had a terrific falsetto, but you gotta love how Bee Gees Mercer goes on “Holding on for Life” (that even sounds like a Bee Gees song title). It’s clear from this album that Mercer’s musical ideas extend far beyond the confines of The Shins’ structured indie rock (though plenty of cool riffs do pop up among the synths throughout the album, Shins fans). Together with Danger Mouse, he’s vividly brought them to life on After the Disco.
