Description
Born in Washington to middle-class parents, Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was an American jazz pianist, composer and bandleader who is sometimes credited as elevating jazz to an art form. From his appearances at the Cotton Club in the late 1920s and tours of Europe in the 1930s, to his ground-breaking compositions (both sacred and secular) and posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1999, Ellington did it all. According to Brian Rust, this Brunswick attributed to the Jungle Band is actually Duke Ellington. He recorded “Jungle Mama” on June 27, 1929 and “Dog Bottom” on June 14, 1929. “Jungle Mama” is moderately paced and “Dog Bttom” is red hot! Potential interior label crack, slight label damage, wear, graying, plays well. V/V+
NOTE: I grade records by a rating system that has been standard in the industry for decades. Still, it can be a subjective undertaking. I am more likely to grade by how the record reproduces aurally (I use a 78 Shure cartridge with a 1950s Voice of Music turntable that has been fit into a 1946 Magnavox Belvedere radio-phonograph) than by how it looks visually. Sometimes a record that appears substantially worn plays very well and sometimes the opposite is true.
