Description
This is a rather uncommon 4 record set by Bruz Fletcher. I really knew very little about this artist until I looked him up on the internet. Although very little is published now days, he was fairly well known in the Hollywood Social Circles of the 1930's. This record set is in good condition and looks like it was played very little. There is a little dust on the top edge of the records where about a 1/4 inch of record was exposed at the top of the sleeves . I do not know how to correctly clean them so other than blowing the dust off I have left them alone. The album jacket has some shop wear from being around for so long. These were recorded and sold by the Liberty Music Shops in New York, an upper end music store in the 1930's and early 1940's that sold fairly exclusive records to a limited clientele.
From what I have found on the internet, Mr. Fletcher's real and tragic life kind of makes day time television soap operas look tame. He was born into a fairly wealthy Indiana Banking Family. He had a fairly unhappy childhood and ran away from home before he was ten years old and attempted suicide in his teens. His sister dressed and acted as a man to get work. moved to Germany and was jilted in getting married by a count. She later went to an asylum and died at age 24. When Bruz was home from an academy, his mother, depressed from a illness drank poison to commit suicide, his grandmother found her and took a sip of the poison to find out what had happened and died also.
When Bruz Fletcher started performing in nightclubs in the late 20's or early 30's, prohibition was still in force and a anything goes atmosphere was prominent in clubs. Gay clubs were all the rage not just for gays but for club goers in general. This was called the Pansy Craze (see wiki article on internet). When prohibition ended in 1933, this craze died and a period of very strict laws came into effect against risque night club acts. Bruz Fletcher and many others found themselves having to tip toe around the edges of legality to even perform. Becoming despondent because of the lack of being able to perform, he committed suicide in 1941 at the age of 34. His father, who had lost his family banking business due to bad investment and was now a elevator operator collected the body for burial.
