This beautiful and exceedingly rare LP from French Columbia (33 FCX 179, French pressing, blue/silver label – ED1, mono) features the Budapest Quartet, with guest artist Milton Katims on viola, in sublime renditions of Mozart’s String Quintets No. 2 in C minor K. 406 (516b) and No. 5 in D Major K. 593, both recorded at Liederkranz Hall, New York, in December 1946.

For these recordings, the Quatuor Budapest was comprised of violinists Josef Roismann and Edgar Ortenberg, violist Boris Kroyt, and cellist Mischa Schneider.

Aside from Columbia Masterworks, early LPs by the Budapest Quartet are, of course, found on the Philips label. However, early imprints on French Columbia are scare and little-known.

This is exalted chamber music making by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the string quartet (or quintet!) will find much to savor here – remarkable performances.

There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Colin Mason, printed in French only. The striking cover design is uncredited.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a bend/crease to the upper-right corner, creasing, light edgewear, and mild shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
