This lovely and extremely rare 10” LP from Lumen (LD - 2 - 403, French pressing, red label, mono) features clarinetist Alfred Burkner and Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet in a truly sublime rendition of Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op. 115, made in the 1950s – a recording produced by the great André Charlin.

The member of the BPO Octet who joined Burkner on this memorable occasion were Alfred Malecek (1st violin), Karl Hofer (2nd violin), Hermann Bethmann (viola), and Wilhelm Posegga (cello).

Inexplicably, this wonderful performance has never, at least to my knowledge, been transferred to CD. It is warm and lyrical, and wholly inside Brahms’s inimitable soundworld.

There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Claude Rostand, printed in French only. The striking cover design is uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor corner wear, discoloration, aging, and light creasing. However, there are no bends, seamsplits owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not perfectly silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. If you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
