C.A. Quintet live 1971 and Last Trip at Lake Pepin... (note: I wrote a little about these albums at the end of the listing )

Well if you have been following my listings lately you know I am trying to lighten my load in preparation to move and am listing a number of things on eBay this spring... some C.A. Quintet related... some not

I would like to have a few less of these albums and I have a few extra copies of some of the magazines/books. ( I will obviously keep a copy of each publication for myself )

So I will list a few more of these "record/magazine packages"to lighten my load. 

And just a reminder... the original album will be re-released in it's original format on 180 gram vinyl soon by Sundazed...  stay tuned...

OK here are some of my thoughts on the two Live Albums 45 years after we loaded the equipment in the bus for the last time.

If you have ever had a chance to read the liner notes on the backs of the albums, I think I explained things fairly well there. But for those that want a little more information here you go. 

On the last night that we played as a group, we were down to just 4 guys and glad things were finally coming to an end. We were missing one of the key members of the original group.... my brother Jim... on bass. So I had to play bass.

The recording we made that night was like someone taking a group photo at the end of a "trip". At the time we had no idea that anyone would ever want to hear about or care about the music of the C.A. Quintet again.

Much of the recording that night was unusable as we just laid down a couple of microphones in front of the band and let the tape recorder go as we played. Not even a recording engineer present ...  It is a miracle that any of the recording turned out to be usable for a record.

So when and if you listen to it factor that in.  Had we known what would happen with our Trip Thru Hell album at the time... well you can imagine.. things would have been different.

The other thing you need to factor in is that we were playing a high school dance and the kids wanted to dance... not hear a concert... like I said in the liner notes... it was like a cat and a dog floating on a raft in a flood. We all endured and got through it ...

There were many performances over the previous years when we played as a full quintet that would have been marvelous to record... but it never happened ....

Nevertheless... while these live albums were not recorded for  the purpose of making an album out of the music, I am surprised that the recordings turned out as well as it did.  There are some moments in these that still give me goose pimples... Tom's guitar playing especially... and Doug's vocals on "Badge" make me want to hit the repeat button when I hear him sing..

So there you go... this is about as honest a critique/review as I can make of the two live albums....

Don't expect a digital 64 track recording with strings over-dubbed and mixed at some famous recording studio by Alan Parsons .... it was  just a couple of cheap microphones with a small Sony reel to reel tape recorder capturing the last moments of a long and fun journey that some guys made who were very good friends and had the good fortune to experience life together while making music. What more could you ask for ?

Now, I am the only one left alive of the four guys that played on stage that night. And I am still very proud of those guys and thankful that I had the honor and opportunity to make music and friendship with them...  they are marvelous spirits.
