Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature is the debut album by Cuban double bassist Cachao, released in 1957 by Panart. The album is composed of descargas, improvised jam sessions with Cuban themes. It was the fourth installment in Panart's Cuban Jam Session series after Julio Gutiérrez's Cuban Jam Session Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and Niño Rivera's Vol. 3. Unlike the other installments, Cachao's session comprised short improvisations instead of extended jams. The album sold over a million copies and became "a Latin music milestone".[1] In 2013, it was induced into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

Of all the descarga albums recorded at Panart studios between 1956 and 1959, Cachao's Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature is the only one to have reached a legendary status despite its unusual style, based on short and intense improvs (instead of extended jams as heard in Julio Gutiérrez's Cuban Jam Session: Volume 1 and 2).

The lineup is impeccable: Cachao on bass and direction, El Negro Vivar on trumpet, Barretico on drums, Tata Güines on the tumbadora, Yeyo Iglesias on bongos and Gustavo Tamayo on güiro. In addition, there is an all-star roster of "guests" which are featured on several killer tracks:

-Tojo, Cuba's foremost trombonist, makes an appearance in the first few tunes of the album, hinting at what would later become El trombón majadero, his big band adaptation of the descarga format. "Trombón criollo" is a standout. It also features Cachao's brother Orestes on piano, who also plays on "Malanga amarilla" and "Cógele el golpe", tracks which include some of the best descarga moments of all time.

-Emilio Peñalver and Virgilio Vixama also play a few tracks, most notably in "Guajeo de saxos", a sax battle between them.

-The legendary Niño Rivera is featured on tres in "Oye mi tres montuno", a danceable tune similar to what is found in Cuban Jam Session Vol. 3, Niño's own descarga session later released by Panart.

-The album ends with "Sorpresa de flauta", a piece featuring renowned bandleader/composer and master of the flute, Richard Egües.

Apart from these guest appearances, the main lineup plays flawlessly as if all the songs had been planned meticulously. And yet it all sounds fresh and innovative. The soloing by Cachao and Barretico on "Descarga cubana" and by El Negro on "Goza mi trompeta" would influence a whole generation of Cuban musicians. Thus, it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that this album is one of the most important LPs in the history of Cuban music, and arguably the last great example of musical innovation during the so-called Golden Age of Cuban music.

It is absolutely beyond belief that this record was improvised. The playing is so tight and fiery that some sort of magic must have possessed Cachao and his mambo brethren for this magnificent session.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY KENNETH BRIDGHAM, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Israel "Cachao" Lopez is the single most influential and important Latin musician today,  in the wake of Tito Puente's death, and the sole legitimate heir to his title of  "The King of Latin Music". This, his first album, issued in the early 1960's amply demonstrates why: this is a torrent of violent, polyrhythmic, textures, the cascade after cascade of rhythms almost atavistic in their virulent intensity and passion. For those of you who are not familiar with Cachao, we would strongly suggest that you grab Rhino Records recent "Sabroso" compilation, which is increasingly becoming for authentic Latin/Afro-Cuban music what Elektra's 1972 "Nuggets" anthology proved to be for Garage and Psych music: a showcase of incredible, but largely obscure, talents of the vast ocean of Latin Music. The compilation features "Descarga Cachao" one of Cachao's signature tunes.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
