DESCRIPTION
Cal Tjader Featuring Mongo Santamaria - “Latino Con Cal Tjader Featuring Mongo Santamaria'” Fantasy Records 8079 (Stereo) from 1962. Super Hard to Find Original Deep Groove Stereo Pressing of this great Latin Jazz album from Cal Tjader and his band in several lineups featuring Mongo Santamaria as well as Willie Bobo, Vince Guaraldi, Paul Horn, Lonnie Hewitt, Al McKibbon, Eddie Coleman, Victor Venegas, Jose “Chombo” Silva and Rolando Lozano. Heavy (165-170 grams) Black Vinyl pressing on the Deep Groove Blue with Gold Print Fantasy Stereo labels and in the Original Sleeve with no Cutouts, Promo markings or Barcode. Includes an Original Fantasy “New Albums Summer / 1966” 4 Page Catalog / Flyer.
The actual date of this pressing is a bit of a mystery to me and I am unable to find another example that matches all of its features exactly. The cover has the Oval Fantasy “High Fidelity” marking in the upper right corner but, unlike most examples, has a “Stereo” Banner across the top rather than a paste-on “Stereo” sticker over the “High Fidelity” marking. The only other examples I can find with the Stereo Banner are later (probably 1980s) reissues. This one has a 1965 copyright date on the back and the Catalog / Flyer is from that period also so I think it is probably from that period. But… unlike the other examples I have found from that period, this one has the Deep Groove Blue label with Gold Printing of the First Pressings and of course it is on Heavy Black Vinyl rather than the Blue Vinyl that I think was used for First Pressings. From what I understand Fantasy stopped issuing Colored Vinyl Pressing around 1965 so, again, I think this is probably from that period. You now know everything I know. For what it’s worth the Runout / Matrix numbers are:

CONDITION
The Sleeve is in great shape. There is maybe a tiny touch of shelf wear and corner softening - super minor. Beyond that, pretty much perfect. Super solid with no splits, stains, writing, cutouts, tears, etc. and would rate as at least EX and maybe better. The Vinyl itself is in clean Glossy condition looking pretty lightly played. If you look really closely you can spot a few slight scuffs and faint hairlines. Plays very nicely overall. Side 1 has a couple spots of light groove noise and maybe a couple soft tics - nothing that distracts and might be further improved by a better cleaning than I can give with my Discwasher brush. Side 2 plays pretty much perfectly Near Mint. I’m calling it VG+ to account for the slight flaws but mostly plays much better. The labels show a couple faint spindle trails but are otherwise Near Mint. The catalog / flyer is Near Mint.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
Very Good Plus (VG+): Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.
Very Good (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing,... Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
I stand by my grades but would like us to be on the same page so no problems arise. I have been selling Vintage Vinyl for over twenty years on the net and I can count the returns I've had on one hand so I believe my grading is fair and accurate. One important note, I try to grade to these Goldmine guides as best as I can understand and apply them. This gives us both a written standard to go by rather than having to guess. But.... it also means that I don't issue refunds over differences of opinion in grading i.e. "That's not MY idea of a VG record!" - I don't know what your standards are and, as such, can't grade to them. I guarantee that items I sell will meet my description, nothing more or less!
