Description
The great violinist Campoli's all-time classic recording of the Tchaikovsky Concerto in D, conducted by Ataulfo Argenta for Decca/London in 1958. This rare 1959 US copy on London was pressed at the same plant, using the same masters, as the highly valuable UK Decca SAX issue. Original true first pressing with the Blue Back cover and 1E/1E stampers. This copy has some surface scuffs and marks, but on the whole they do not affect the play much. As is often the cases with these LPs, the very beginning of each side is slightly rough. Side one has some crackling for only a few seconds at the very start, and side two for a bit longer, with a few more ticks and occasional popping intermittently sounding here and there, but not constantly. Most of the way through it sounds great, but there are some moments of popping that are there and so I must mention them. After that crackle fades side one, the rest of the side plays just beautifully, and on side two most of the time it is clear and quiet, and breathtaking. This recording is absolutely glorious and this copy brings much of the glory to life just as you want it. Oh, one other flaw: at the very end, the very last note, there is a rough patch that makes the needle jump back to the last moment again and again, but not before the end of the recording. That is, you hear the whole thing, and then there is a rough moment that sends the needle to the last note again. You hear it all, but it catches after it's over. Annoying but not a big deal, really. The cover is excellent, actually almost perfect, with the only flaw being a small corner ding at the upper right. Despite the surface marks this is a lovely copy.
