Labeled as one of the first “krautrock” groups, Can was founded in 1968 by Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit who formed a group which would utilize and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.
The band’s powerful influence has never diminished, and their indelible mark is apparent in the bands who freely acknowledge their importance - from Portishead, James Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd, Mogwai, Kanye West (who sampled ‘Sing Swan Song’) and Radiohead - as well as across other disciplines such as visual art and literature.
MONSTER MOVIE
Monster Movie, Can's debut album was originally recorded and released in 1969. The use of improvisation, experimentation, editing and layering of sounds set a standard for Can's subsequent albums in the early 1970s, which were seminal to the freewheeling avant-garde style dubbed "krautrock" by the British music press. Monster Movie is the only album on which Malcolm Mooney performed all of the vocals until Rite Time, 20 years later.
SOUNDTRACKS
Soundtracks is a compilation album, first released in 1970, consisting of tracks written for film. The album marks the departure of the band's original vocalist Malcolm Mooney, who sings on two tracks, to be replaced by new member Damo Suzuki. "Don't Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone" is Damo Suzuki's first recorded performance with Can.
TAGO MAGO
Can’s third studio album originally recorded in 1971 is the first album with Damo Suzuki on vocals, and features the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards. Vocalist Damo Suzuki contributes something unique to the sound of the band. Tago Mago was the group's finest moment and is more than worthy of all the praise it's generated.
EGE BAMYASI
Ege Bamyasi is Can's fourth studio album originally recorded and released in in 1972. Pitchfork went on to name Ege Bamyasi #19 on it's list of "Top 100 Albums of the 1970s." Popular tracks include "Vitamin C" and "Spoon" and a number of the other tracks have been sampled and covered. Kanye West sampled "Sing Swan Song" on his song, "Drunk and Hot Girls" off the album, Graduation, and Beck covered "I'm So Green" for a Can tribute album. Ege Bamyasi, which means "Aegean Okra" in Turkish also features one of the band's most iconic front cover images.
