Label & Format: United Artists – Cream and pale brown format. This vintage copy has the UK catalogue number but was pressed in their native Germany and is the most sort-after pressing made. There is an overprint at the 4 o’clock position on the label rims obscuring the made in England text. This has the product of Liberty-United Artists credits.

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean and highly attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Always a pleasure to find a copy of this classic like this.

Country of Manufacture: This was the initial copy sold in the UK, it has all the UK criteria of the correct catalogue number on labels and cover with UK reference on the uncredited sleeve. The record was manufactured in Can’s native country, Germany and has the large 29414 deep punched matrixes. This original copy includes the rare ‘Shakespeare’ inner sleeve which only came with this pressed version.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams, one of heaviest Can albums I have had. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Now becoming rarer and hard to find, this original Anglo-German pressing with its original inner is the most prized of the versions to own for this classic Krautrock gem.

Original Year of Release: 1972

Matrix Nos: 29414 A2/C3A / 29414 B1/C3A (some of the deepest punched matrix numbers I’ve ever seen and they can be clearly seen on my label picture). ‘Made in Germany’ is also punched into the dead wax area of each side.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument at all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in high grading conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: It’s always a pleasure just to offer any early Can album. Arguably the definitive and most important of the German progressive bands of the early 70s. Known affectionally as ‘Krautrock’ these types broke new barriers in rock music. Can took this art to new levels of creativity and excellence, spawning a host of immitators - few came close. This album features their classic line-up as listed above. The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt, a classically trained keyboard player, had a karate chopping style which was unusual. Czukay’s basslines had a throbbing sound, and the strings really twang, Leipzeit’s percussion was almost metronomic at times and is without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever. And the late, great Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the Can style perfectly. That leaves Damo: not so much a singer but a vocalist who at times just breathes down the mike - inventive, abstract and sometimes scary - at times he just goes completely off the rails bursting into free-form improvisation. The same can be said of Can in general really. Live they were never the same and their early 70s gigs are legendary, often lasting through to the early hours of the morning. Karoli and Damo, a mass of long hair and face almost invisible, Czukay stark features with that customary drooping moustache, a bundle of manic concentration, Schmidt climbing atop his keyboards keeping control, almost as a conductor with nods and gestures, and Jaki pounding the skins like a man possessed - what an awesome band Can were. This, their fourth album is truly amazing and for many fans, their very best. Following on from the masterpiece which was Tago Magowas never going to be easy, but again they excelled, this takes rock music to new levels of creativity and excellence. A mix of some shorter songs, almost catchy at times, Ege Bamyasi (named from a can of Turkish okra) includes the delicate ‘Sing Swan Song’ where Damos vocals can almost be understood. To the other extreme, ‘Soup’ is weird, very weird, Damo goes into hyperdrive with a barrage of vocal improvisation over a backdrop of manic keyboards - this track breaks into the avant garde and is totally compelling. This copy on offer is a very strong example. It’s the early Anglo-German pressing which is the version most Can connoisseurs want as it offers the best possible sound quality. This legeneary band’s albums are fast becoming extinct now and finding the cleanest top examples becoming harder and harder, especially the Suzuki era ones. This is a little played record with a very fine cover. The is slightly unusual and that is explained further down. Most fans of the underground German scene will treasure this one.

Cover Condition and Details: Excellent, or very close too. A single, fully laminated cover. No printing credits but has the Liberty/United Artists Records Ltd 37-41 Mortimer Street, London text and UK catalogue number. It comes with elusive ‘Shakespeare’ UA inner.

Lamination: Front & Back: Although laminated, this cover often suffers major issues with lifting and few, if any will totally avoid it. Here any non-adhesion is confined to the front spine edge and this is mostly a fine line with just the bottom corner having a slightly large blister. There are some spine hairline cracks on this edge also but other creases are few and mostly small and fine. The back has a thumb type semi-crease near the centre but this (and most others) only really show with angled viewing and do not detract from the superb artwork to any degree. Overall the laminate is clean, fresh and clear with any dulling or friction rubs being modest and light, again seen under light. The artwork retains it’s intense vivid colour and rich blackness and there is no peeling at all. So an attractive example, now deeply into its thirties, this will not prove easy to find much better.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top is almost as made, the bottom has ultra faint and mild friction rubs, but look hard.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp, with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is quite solid but has a few light surface crease-cracks, they show little. Some compression is also present but all text is present under the unpeeled laminated, hence it’s unworn or damaged.

Corners: All four are in fantastic shape with minimal traces of any wear, all retain excellent crisp shape.

Cover Summary: A very fine all round example of this classic, revealing 70s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Not blemish free, the spine has clearly taken some compression, but that apart, there is little else to fault to any significant degree and on that basis, I am sure many, if not most collectors will enjoy it. Never an easy one to find as an original to find even this nice.

The Inner: EX but visually it looks much better. It has one edge split from record movement in the distant past. Unlined and made with fairly thin paper, few will ever survive with no edge splits and that’s a fact. With such a solid record inside, its a near miracle this one has only one. Still a lovely shade of white and avoiding toning or yellowing. The same for creasing, this has little with just mild record impression. This includes the famous Shakespeare text as can be seen on my picture. But unusually, the tracks for side two are largely missing which is a little bizarre, never seen this before. This appears to be a flaw within the printing process. Where the ink ends, the outline of the missing songs can be seen pressed into the inner. It appears the type did not receive any ink when being printed. Having been in the printing trade for way over 30 years, the only explanation I can think of is two sheets were lifted at once or something masked this area of the paper. It sometimes happened in postage stamp manufacture and these ‘misprints’ are often worth fortunes to specialist collectors. Whether it’sthe same for record covers or inners I do not know, it’s a unusual occurrence anyway. The window hole is prisine both sides with no even a nick split and this is the same on the top opening which has not even burred. This scarce, and in this case, unusual inner, only available with initial pressings and certainly crucial to this wonderful album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: To grade this underground classic less than full Excellent would not be doing it full justice. With ultra scrutiny under angled light a few ultra fine and faint surface trace marks can just be seen. Clearly little played and with incredible sound values. For those few who bought these initially, most played them heavily, thus most are found in poor or even trashed conditions. Not this gem. Very clean with a fine shine and very heavily pressed – a supreme quality German pressing for one of their finest ever rock exports. Fresh and intense black with wide, deep and complex groove patterns all giving clues to phenomenal dynamics and real high-fidelity sound. This record is the heaviest pressing for this title I have yet held, I feel sure it will please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality This wonderful album plays even above to its visual grading with incredible detail, punch, and is far more intense than the CD version. Put this on to a quality deck and hear for yourself, the sounds embedded into these unworn deep grooves will blow any unsuspecting listener away. Get this on to a worthy system and be prepared to be thrilled. Czukay’s basslines are so clean and really stand out, Leipzeit’s drumming is astonishing with depth and power, the sonic delivery from these unworn grooves take you into the recording studio itself. A very quiet, quality pressing very few unwanted sounds or blemishes. UA records were not always the best in the world for silent pressings but this German pressed ‘UK’ copy is the best and definitive copy to own, few will approach this for quality, focused and precise sound. There is no sound degrading or distortion and this complex record tracks effortlessly. A wonderful copy that even the discerning audiophile collector should enjoy.

End Piece: With it’s pulsating rhythms and extremes of style this is an exciting experience. Can were the leading pioneers of this genre, but the whole German underground scene was bursting with talent and excitement as this time. Not music for the faint-hearted, this album would obviously had only fairly limited sales. Early copies were never abundant, Spoon issued, later pressings can be found a little more easily, but will not have quite the same impact for the connoisseur sound purist as they do seem to lack the depth and grace of the originals. A very fine all round vintage copy - pressed in their native Germany - this trip into the wonderful world of Krautrock will appeal to all fans of this legendary band. Ege Bamyasi remains one of the truly essential Can albums, its importance to the development of later Indie Rock is beyond any doubt and cannot be overstated - for those unfamiliar this is not a bad place to start, although the next album Future Days is less challenging and a little easier on the senses. Tago Mago remains for me the absolute classic Can album but this title is a very close second. For those prepared to listen, this is around 40 minutes of the most compelling and original music you could wish for and I CAN strongly recommend it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
