CAN Monster Movie original German Liberty

Welcome! Here is an early German press of Can Monster Movie (Liberty LBS 83 342). On this, the first Can album, the line-up was Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, and Malcolm Mooney.

As you may know, Monster Movie was first issued as a private press of 600 copies on the Music Factory label in 1969. Liberty picked it up later that same year, and that is what is on offer here.

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Side 1: SRS 001 A is scratched in. Below that 83 342-A is scratched in. A lone X is scratched in where a stamper might be expected. Lastly, Made in Germany is stamped in.


Side 2: SRS 001 B is scratched in. Next to that, not below it, 83 342-B is scratched in. Just like the Side 1 runoff, an X is scratched in where a stamper might be expected, and Made in Germany is stamped in.

Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: The unlaminated sleeve grades Excellent+. There is just a touch of surface wear at the top of both the front and back, leaving a VERY faint trace of ringwear to the top of the front. There is minor wear along the bottom edge. There is a minor bump to the corner at the top of the spine, but the sleeve is really quite nice overall. The edge where the record is inserted is razor sharp. The unforgiving black back cover has survived in superb shape! The cover is printed by Druckhaus Maack KG, 5880 Lüdenscheid.

Vinyl: The vinyl grades Mint-. It looks and plays beautifully! Really, you could not possibly improve on this.

Labels: Both labels are absolutely pristine. There is NO spindle tracking at all on either label!

Inner Sleeve: This album has its original plain white inner sleeve, with angled top corners and a window on one side where the label peeps out. This inner is a bright white and absolutely pristine.

And, in the end: Check out the wonderfully informative site popsike.com to get an idea of what you will have to pay for a Music Factory copy of this album (hint: it’s in the thousands of dollars). That would be nice, but this early German press is the next best thing. I bought this new in 1973 and have taken great care of it over the years.
