RARE CANADA! Beatles LOVE ME DO + P.S. I LOVE YOU - Rock 45 *NO DASHES* 2nd Variation (of 5) January 1964. Capitol 72076.
NOTES ON THIS SCARCE 45: (Courtesy Piers Hemmingsen's book "The Beatles CANADIAN Discography (1962-1970 - Part 1 45 RPM)
- Capitol 72076 first record issued in North America attributed to The Beatles - "NO DASHES" "NO NUMBERS" - First issue of 72076, February 1963, had no dashes/numbers in the lead-out area and R in records was misplaced. Next issue (variation #2) issued January 1964 included no dashes/numbers after the matrix number (7XCE-17144-7) but the R placement was corrected. - Apparently only 1000 first run copies made of 72076 of which few sold. - Received no promotion - Hand-written Matrix numbers for this 72076 - 7XCE-17144, 7XCE-17145. - Original Capitol Black & White sleeve dated February 7, 1963 (see photo) - Left hand notation on label - SIDE A, SIDE B - featured Ringo Starr on drums. Later issues, no SIDE A, SIDE B, on labels, featured Andy White on drums. 
More information from a sale in 2014 on this enigmatic platter:

This is the initial pressing of Love Me Do from Canada of which, according to Paul White, there were 100 pressed and 75 sold. Paul White was the A&R Manager at Capitol of Canada who authorized release of this first Beatles, Capitol single in North America on February 18th 1963.

This has been documented by Piers Hemmingsen in his book The Beatles Canadian Discography, Part 1- 45 RPM & Other Special 7" Discs. Mr. Hemmingsen has personally interviewed Mr. White and is a known authority on Beatles Canadian records having published two, well researched books on the subject (See Here). Read a statement from Paul White Here. He also presented this information in an article from Beatlology Magazine Vol.5 No.5, May/June 2003 on page 6. In it he explains how to discern this disc from later pressings.

The initial pressings of Love Me Do have the matrix number hand-etched in the trail-off area of the vinyl with NO dash "-" or numeral following the dash (7XCE 17144). This is the only pressing of Love Me Do to be issued before She Loves You became a hit in Canada and Beatlemania began in the USA. All subsequent copies have the dash following the hand-etched matrix and a number following the dash (7XCE 17144-2) and were not issued until late in 1963. These later pressings are plentiful and easily found as many thousands were pressed and a large percentage exported to the USA.

In addition, on the initial pressings the characters are taller than all the subsequent ones. First pressing characters are at least 1/8" (4mm) tall whereas later copies are 1/16"-3/32" (2-3mm) tall.

With regard to the last point, the characters on this record are actually ¼" (5mm) high. 
UPDATE (thanks, Len): it appears the very first release had a label misprint. The "R" in records beneath the Capitol logo (left side) was printed into the yellow swirl. An engineer or executive with Capitol likely noted this error (companies even back then were quite fussy with logos and text placement within) and it was corrected but the second batch was not considered a re-issue, rather a print correction. When Beatlemania took off in mid 1964 and beyond, new re-issues included a dash and number.

GRADING: Platter A/B sides are visually inspected and an OVERALL rating is given. If feelers are present will advise. Needle drops on A/B sides (short play positions) determine OVERALL sound quality.
