Label Conditions: Both incredibly clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. For a mono record this great age, this is a beautifully preserved example with sound to match.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The classic debut by this legendary blues-boogie-rock American band, after appearances at the Monterey and Woodstock festivals, they became world famous and popular within this genre. Fronted by the charismatic Bob Hite, affectionally known as ‘The Bear’, he and the band were superb live. What a pleasure to offer this vintage gem in mono this clean as well, fans and collectors should treasure this very well preserved UK example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate and a dedicated Mono (LBL) example. The laminate wraps around the closed folds and ends on the matt, smooth back via the spine. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and includes the March 1968 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Beautifully fresh, clear and shiny laminate that has no lifting and hardly any traces of friction rubs or dulling to the super-smooth surface. This too even when viewed critically under bright angled light. Just one half moon surface crease away from the edges and a gentle thumb semi-crease more towards the left edge. Any others are just the usual very fine surface hairline types, and only very few of those. The artwork retaiins lovely deep vibrant colour and has barely aged at all.

Cover Back: This really does come quite close to reminding of new with the white surface, still just that, white. Barely aged with no grubbiness worthy of mention, even the laminate end on the spine is clean. Hardly any creasing at all and no ring wear or rubbing, they hardly get much better.

Top Edge: Very smooth, clean and sharp, even though the back panel is a fraction proud near the spine edge, even this has not thickened. and it also remains mostly straight.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same, being the storage edge, a trace of thickening to back panel end is near impossible to avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp to very sharp with little wear at all, any thickening or burring very slight indeed as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light and gentle. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains very smooth and unscuffed to the finger tip.

Corners: Again, hardly any tip wear at all, with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very superb all-round example of this vintage 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better – indeed, this could prove a substantial upgrade for many. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a polylined inner and date-coded 3-68 (March 1968), it has aged only slightly and has only fairly light corner creases and no edge splits or repairs. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining clear.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. The odd ultra gentle paper scuff or fine hairlines, there are NO penetrating scratches on this splendid disc at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage classic mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this being played on a very revealing Linn LP12 turntable that mono records were not really designed for. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, and I for one wish all mono gems could be found this clean. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
