Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of TEST PRESSING of this classic Captain Beefheart album. While many test pressings often have alternate or demo- versions of known, later released songs, and while it is possible that this particular test pressing contains demo or alternate versions of some of the tracks, please don’t take our word that it does: unfortunately, we are not familiar with the entire album (we know only a few songs) and we regret  we cannot provide any competent information on how different this TEST PRESSING may be from the official release. Please contact us if you have any questions. The generic white test pressing label identifies the artist, title, catalog number and song titles but is otherwise (mostly) blank and without much other details.

This album contains sessions recorded in August 1965 (a few months before their legendary "Safe as Milk" sessions), and was produced by Bob Krasnow (later of blue Thumb label, which released Captain Beefheart’s next album as Safe as Milk). Ostensibly, Cap Beefheart was brutally unhappy with Bob Krasnow's unauthorized "psychedelic" mix, but, in our view, the mix aged very nicely, indeed.  Track listing: Teroplane (Tarotplane) - Kandy Korn - 25th Century Quaker - Mirror Man.

Obsessive Captain Beefheart collectors will surely note that one of the tracks (“Teroplane”) has a slightly different title on this test pressing than on the commercially released version of the album (where it is titled, somewhat ridiculously, “Tarotplane”). We suspect that this was simply a case of comedy of errors, where one person hears one thing, passes on the info to another, who then hears another thing, etcetera. In fact, I would be willing to bet that the original title of the track was  Terraplane which would make much more sense than either of the other two titles (on the other hand, when did Captain Beefheart actually make sense and aspire to any sense of logic?) . We also note that the track timings vary from those noted in the Buddah/MCA compact disc  between 1 and 5 seconds, which is probably a time measurement margin of error or a rounding-up variance, although it is possible that two tracks have slightly extended fades.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(d)          Mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

COVER : This TEST PRESSING – LIKE ALMOST ALL OTHER REFERENCE PRESSINGS - comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover.
