1968's Strictly Personal is actually a terrific album, every bit the equal of Safe As Milk and Trout Mask Replica.
Opening with "Ah Feel Like Ahcid," an a cappella blues workout with its roots in Son House's "Death Letter," the brief (barely 35 minutes) album is at the same time simpler and weirder than Safe As Milk had been.
Working without another songwriter or arranger for the first time, Captain Beefheart strips his idiosyncratic blues down to the bone, with several of the songs (especially "Son of Mirror Man/Mere Man") having little in the way of lyrics or chords beyond the most primeval stomp.
This LP is quite controversial amongst Beefheart fans, divided on its production as Bob Krasnow remixed the album while Don Van Vliet and crew were off on a European tour, adding extraneous sound effects like heartbeats, phasing and flanging but the strength of the performances, especially those of drummer John French, make his efforts little more than superfluous window dressing.
Strictly Personal is a fascinating, underrated release.

LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with only light/moderate spindles evident when angled to the light - this copy has not been over-played at all and it's also been very carefully handled
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there are some light brush/scuff marks but these are very light and of no real audio consequence - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery - very deep and rich and dense and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, barley any clicks or pops (hardly any and none which rise above background or are worthy of a special mention) and no surface noise The controversial use of phasing is in my opinion, fantastic, I love it and the whole LP plays beautifully throughout with superb clarity, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds superb and is strictly graded a strong EXCELLENT to (+) for audio - very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The original matt gatefold sleeve is clean and fresh with little wear to speak of. The thick spine displays all text clear and bold and the surfaces are clean and unrubbed. There is some storage rubbing to the bottom edge but it's very minor otherwise, a very fine example of this easily worn and rubbed untreated sleeve - EXCELLENT (if not better)
