CARAVAN were the other half of the WILDE FLOWERS - the SOFT MACHINE being the other - that originated in Canterbury, Kent. The band itself was originally formed in early 1968 by guitarist/vocalist Pye HASTINGS, keyboardist Dave SINCLAIR, bassist/vocalist Richard SINCLAIR (later of HATFIELD & THE NORTH, NATIONAL HEALTH, etc.), and drummer Richard COUGHLAN. All four members of CARAVAN were, at one time or another, in that band. They were a leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound".

On offer here, from my own collection, is a stunning original UK 1ST PRESS LP of the groups fifth album 'For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night'.

Both the vinyl and gatefold cover are in stunning near Mint condition, album looks virtually un-played.

The Vinyl Is In Stunning Near Mint Condition - Plays Superbly

(This original 1973 UK Deram label first pressing still retains its full gloss and sheen with beautiful surfaces, it has that 'just pressed' look and judging by the labels and lack of spindle marks it has been looked after and cared for extremely well. Under strong light you can just see a few faint wispy hairlines and paper marks from the inner sleeve. Nothing serious and nothing to affect the playing at all. Play tested today with great powerful sound quality. The disc plays superbly all the way through on both sides. Sharp and clear loud sound, with only very minor and light sporadic audible crackle, no skips, no jumps, no sticking, no serious loud pops or clicks that are noticeable. The vinyl has an incredible stereo reproduction with fantastic near perfect sound quality. A great original UK 1st pressing of this rare progressive rock LP. I doubt if you can find a significantly better condition original copy than this one!)

(Original first pressing Deram Red & White labels are immaculate, unmarked and in pristine condition. On close inspection of the centre hole I cannot see any spindle marks whatsoever!! This album has been played very few times during its near 40 years of existence. A pretty perfect set of Deram labels.)

Beautiful Outer Laminated Gatefold Sleeve With Semi-Sheen Centrefold Panels 

(The laminated gatefold cover 'Printed in England by Robert Stace' is in stunning MINT- condition. There are no heavy creases, writing, stickers, tears or rips. The front and back are immaculate, having only a few very light wrinkles near the spine, and barely any wear or rubbing whatsoever. All the seams and spine are superb with hardly any shelfwear of speak of at all. The wide spine is superb with all text fully legible. The opening edges are still very sharp and straight. Opening the gatefold reveals a pair of inner panels with barely a mark on them. The original 'Made In England' Blue and White Decca polylined inner sleeve is present and is in excellent condition. I am happy to grade this beautiful gatefold sleeve at a genuine MINT- condition. I believe it would be difficult, nigh on impossible, to find a very much better copy of this near 40 years old gatefold sleeve. A real beauty indeed!)

On offer here, from my own collection, is a SUPERB virtually MINT condition original 1973 UK 1st PRESS LP of the great CARAVAN album titled "FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT", issued on the UK ORIGINAL 1st PRESS DERAM label.

This is one of the finest Caravan albums.

Starting more rocking then any of their past classics, "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night" (a classic title if there ever was one), 'Memory Lain, Hugh/ Headloss' is a super beginning with more upfront guitar by Pye Hastings with viola and flute punctuating the track wonderfully. I love how halfway through the song sounds like its reaching a climax when it delves into part 2, 'Headloss'  with Richardson's viola taking center stage. Pye sings great throughout the album. "Surprise, Surprise" has Hasting's typical fragile and sweet singing with nice bass by newcomer Perry. The following killer of a track, "C'thlu Thlu" a downright chilling and spooky number, Sinclair's keyboard work is fantastic on this weird but excellent song, just check it out about 4 minutes in until the end, CLASSIC! Now for those who miss their whimsical side, "The Dog, The Dog, He's At It Again" will satisfy you to no end. Funny lyrics and an infectious melody it would fit in nicely on any of their previous albums. "Be Alright/ Chance of a Lifetime" is a rousing number with Richardson's viola leading the charge with the orchestra taking up much of the background and fiery guitar by Hastings. I think it's one of their best rockers ever. Finally we reach the mini-epic track 7, (too many sub-titles for me to type, sorry). If you like orchestral prog you'll be in ectasy with this number, hypnotic and thundering it's another classic. As their first album was psych/prog, the second more prog than psych, the third a whimsical/prog and their fourth a jazzier/prog, this album leans more towards the symph side of prog yet still has their Canterbury prog roots. I say it fits in well with the whole canon of their early albums. 

The songs are simple yet complicated, with an aura of happiness that can be enjoyed over and over again. Not only does it feature the usual superb flute and keyboard solos (played by Jimmy Hastings and Dave Sinclair respectively), but viola player Geoff Richardson turns out to be a crucial acquisition, and Pye Hastings comes up with some of his best ever songs. The opening duo of "Memory Lain, Hugh / Headloss" and "Hoedown" (played with great gusto by the band, fortified by a horn section) is one of the most cheering moments in early 1970s prog. But the rest of the album is superior as well. "The dog, the dog, is at it again" must be one of prog's most irresistible singalong ditties.

In my opinion this is among THE best Caravan albums, and in fact, one of my favourite albums of all time. Every song provides such an impact.  Overall, this is an amazing album that captures Caravan at maybe not their most defining state, that which is 'In The Land Of Grey And Pink' but in my oppinion, their best state musically. An essential addition to any music collection. This is absolutely essential if you enjoy progressive / Canterbury music. Yet another masterpiece! Brilliant album!!

This ORIGINAL 1973 UK DERAM RECORDS 1ST PRESS album is a 'MUST HAVE' for CARAVAN fans / collectors as well as DERAM label collectors and BRITISH 70's PROG ROCK fans.

 The record is pressed on THICK quality vinyl. The Cat.No. is SDL-R 12 on the ORIGINAL UK 1st PRESS DERAM RED & WHITE LABEL (see picture) and is a 1973 UK Stereo 1st Pressing (there were NO Monos!)!!

I very much doubt if you can find a better condition original UK 1st PRESS of this GREAT early 70's UK PROGRESSIVE ROCK LP!!

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing
