Caravan : In The Land Of Grey And Pink 1D / 1D 1st Press

This very collectable first pressing plays to a superb standard with no clicks or pops and only a handful of light ticks on a couple of tracks.  The vast majority is 'as new' with a clarity, definition and warmth that is so impressive.  The vinyl has been very well preserved and visually it is also very strong.

The laminated gatefold is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the inner sleeve (I suspect not the original) is in great condition also.

As this is a genuine first press it has the brown/white Deram labels and of course the 1D/1D matrix.  This is one of the earlier ones as it has only a single stamper on each side.

Visual grading

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has very strong glossy sheen with no scratches.  There are a small number of very faint hairlines and some faint 'specks' but these have no affect on the superb audio, they are purely superficial.  The JT tax stamp can clearly be seen on the run out grooves.  The brown/white Deram labels have very little spindle wear and are very clean apart from some faint mottling spots that you can only see when you hold the record at a certain angle.

Play grading

The intro on 'Golf Girl' plays with stunning clarity and the first vocal has no 'background' either.  It continues in the same way with a depth and warmth that is second to none.  The clarity of sound is exceptional and and you can hear every subtle nuance 'within' the music, you miss nothing as each note is just so 'clean'.  Every vocal and instrumental section plays beautifully and the long fade out has only a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  This is a Mint- start to the album.

'Winter Wine' begins perfectly and the opening vocal has only a small number of very light ticks that are non-intrusive.  As the percussion comes in the playback is faultless and this fine standard is kept up as it progresses.  Once again the clarity really stands out as there is no intrusion on the audio at all and the long mid instrumental section is a case in point, the playback is amazing!  There is one mega light tick as the vocal returns which you could easily miss as it is so quiet and the remainder is nigh on perfect with just a hint of light static on the final note.  I will grade the intro as Near Mint- and from then on the audio easily deserves a Mint- grade.

'Love To Love You (And Tonight Pigs Will Fly)' plays with stunning audio from start to finish with...no interference.  I cannot overstate just how sharp and precise the audio is here.  The playback is unbelievably 'clean' and only at the end of the fade out are there a couple of light ticks.  This is Mint- without a doubt.

The acoustic intro on 'In The Land Of Grey And Pink' has no 'background' and the opening vocal is just as impressive.  It continues to play with a clarity that defies its 51 years of age.  As per the rest of the side the clarity and definition shows how well this vinyl has been preserved and in essence it plays with flawless precision from the first note to the last.  I am tempted to grade as Mint but I will say Mint- just to err on the side of caution!

The intro on 'Nine Feet Underground' plays with great clarity and there are only three light ticks about 15 seconds in.  From then on this first instrumental section plays with stunning precision and no other 'background' whatsoever.  The next passage ''Love's A Friend'' is 'as new' and ''Make It 76'' is just as strong with not so much as a dust tick.  The very quiet ''Dance Of The Seven Paper Hankies'' section plays beautifully with only a minimal touch of barely audible static that hardly warrants a mention as it is totally non-intrusive.  The next two instrumental sections play to a fantastic standard with literally no interference and the second vocal section on ''Disassociation'' plays so clearly with only a couple very light static 'moments'.  I only mention this to be 'complete' in my grading - it is again so quiet - blink and you miss it!   This near 23 minute epic ends with the high octane ''100% Proof'' which plays with phenomenal power and depth from the get go.  It is the perfect conclusion - the clarity and energy here is STUNNING to say the least.  This side is Mint- with only the opening ''Nigel Blows A Tune'' grading as Near Mint- because of the three ticks.  It has to be said though that the clarity and depth of the audio throughout is of the highest calibre.

In summary this very collectable first pressing plays with superb audio on both sides with barely any 'background'.  As stated the sonic quality can hardly be faulted and it is clear this vinyl has not been overplayed.  There are no clicks or pops, next to no static and only a handful of very light ticks.  It's not often you find a genuine first press as stunning as this!  It really is an outstanding album and will impress any avid collector.

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

The laminated cover is in excellent condition with only very minimal shelf wear.  The edges have very little rubbing and the spine is very clean albeit ever so slightly compressed with the usual 'crease' running down the centre but remains 100% legible.  The corners have very little wear and the opening edges are also incredibly clean with no obvious wear at all.  The front cover has lost none of its original colour and is unmarked aside from the usual light marking next to the right edge where there is no laminate.  There are a couple of minor laminate creases next to the spine also.  The back cover is the same with only a little 'fading' near the top edge and the inside of the gatefold is very clean with only 3/4 faint spots.  A very impressive cover overall.

The poly-lined Decca inner is in great condition with no side splits or tears, no marking and barely any creasing.  However, I very doubt it is the original as it is dated 10-76 on one side.
