IN BEAUTIFUL, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION DELIVERING CLEAN AUDIO THROUGHOUT - FANTASTIC COPY OF THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF WORK - COMPLETELY OVERLOOKED AT THE TIME RELEASED, AS IT WAS BANDS LIKE GENESIS, YES, URIAH HEEP, DEEP PURPLE THAT MOST PROG FANS TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO.
In the Land of Grey and Pink is considered by many to be a pinnacle release from Caravan. The album contains an undeniable and decidedly English sense of humour and charm. In addition, this would mark the end of the band's premier line-up. Co-founder David Sinclair would leave Caravan to form Matching Mole with Soft Machine drummer and vocalist Robert Wyatt in August of 1971. As a group effort, In the Land of Grey and Pink displays all the ethereal brilliance Caravan created on their previous pair of 12" outings. Their blending of jazz and folk instrumentation and improvisational styles hints at Traffic and Family, as displayed on "Winter Wine," as well as the Hammond, sax and heavy guitar riffing driven "Nine Feet Underground", probably the centre piece of this classic album. These contrast the decidedly aggressive sounds concurrent with albums from King Crimson. In fact, beginning with the album's title, there seems to be pastoral qualities and motifs throughout. Another reason enthusiasts rank this album among their favourites is the group dynamic which has rarely sounded more singular or cohesive. David Sinclair's lyrics are of particular note, especially the middle-earth imagery used on "Winter Wine" or the enduring whimsy of "Golf Girl."
Gatefold Sleeve: EX. Great sleeve with hardly any wear. Perfectly flat without any wear, even the edges are perfect!! Lightest of top ring to the rear. Some age related yellowing spots on the inside gatefold. The opening is super crisp the spine is 100% legible.
Vinyl: NM. Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen. A SUPERB VINYL COPY WHICH WILL PROVE HARD TO BETTER!!! Indeed, it has barely been played if at all! There are NO spindle traces at all!! The whole LP sounds absolutely stunning and plays to an extremely high standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion and is very strictly graded a strong NM for audio and visual appearance - great copy!! I have played this on my very revealing setup with a Linn Sondek cartridge and thoroughly enjoyed it. An assured upgrade for all collectors. Of course, NO skips, NO jumps, NO ticks, No crackle..
