CARAVAN

WATERLOO LILY

DERAM  SDL 8 (UK) 1972

produced by David Hitchcock for Gruggy Woof

engineered by David Grinsted

note: the photo on the right shows my own, as well as the auction copy, in order to display the complete exterior layout

I do not open gatefold covers completely flat since this practise is likely to permanently damage or weaken the spine

matrix numbers:  ZAL-11258.P-3W  and  ZAL-11259.P-3W

stampers:  1  and  1

original UK 1972 1st press record:  mint

original ‘large’ brown & white (and bigger logo) DERAM labels:  mint

original 1st press cover printed in England by Robert Stace:  very near mint

correct original inner sleeve date coded 4-72:  mint

very few copies were pressed on the 'large' brown and white label with bigger DERAM lettering since the change to the rather less imposing red and white 'small' label design / company logo was imminent, this being possibly the very last Deram LP to be issued (in April 1972) on the brown label - I have had numerous copies of the album in stock over the years, only two of which have been brown label 1st pressings (this, and my own copy, both owned by me from new - the one on offer having been preserved among my mint archive stock) - the record is mint with only the most featherlight traces from occasional removal, insertion and storage in the original poly-lined inner sleeve - it will play as new throughout and, in keeping with virtually all Caravan (and Deram, for that matter) recordings, is blessed with splendid presence and clarity across the full frequency range - the 1st press thick cover is also incredibly pristine and so close to 100% mint - quite exceptional considering it was printed with an unlaminated matt finish to the delicate, 'sepia' tinted, reversed (to place 'Lily' on the front), reproduction of William Hogarth's The Tavern Scene from A Rake's Progress (painted 1732-1734) - faultless interior gatefold layout (artwork by the always excellent David Anstey) with wonderful vibrant colour - immaculate spine with perfect lettering - also crisp, tight seams with razor-sharp corners and opening edges - there is no circular wear or edge / seam wear to either the front, inside or rear whatsoever! - the labels are clean, bright and sharp with, of course, no signs of spindle use - the record is housed in the original snow-white mint poly-lined original 'blue squares' inner sleeve correctly date coded 4-72 - the entire package is in VERY NEAR MINT condition - although still reasonably common with red and white 'small' Deram labels, the album is super RARE as a brown label 1st pressing in this virtually unblemished condition - needless to say, this musem-quality artefact retains its appealing factory-fresh smell - no horrible smoke or damp odours! - fantastic item - an essential landmark progressive LP!
