Paired with Stax writing whiz-kids Isaac Hayes and David Porter, Thomas had her greatest chart run, beginning with the hit "B-A-B-Y" and continuing with "Let Me Be Good to You." Both of those appear here, alongside evocative slabs of country-soul in covers of Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces." For good measure, Thomas also tries her hand at the blues with covers of Howlin' Wolf's "Little Red Rooster" and Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me to Do?"

By and large, this is one of Carla Thomas's most consistent and cohesive sets. The Stax studio group are in fine form, and Carla's voice works beautifully with the blues and country-based material selected here. The only let-downs, to my mind, are the ballads, with Carla's rendition of "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" yet to grow on me. It's not just that the song isn't the best vehicle for her voice (or vice versa), but the arrangement fails to do anything particularly interesting with the song. But "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Let Me Be Good to You" more than compensate.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (minor scuff noted on "What have you got to offer me")

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in black marker, about ½ x 2 inches in size)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-        Back cover has a small sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)
