AN EXCELLENT PLAYING COPY OF THIS RARE PICTURE LABEL 78 ON UK BRUNSWICK FEATURING TWO GREAT CARMEN MIRANDA SONGS FROM HER FILM "WEEKEND IN HAVANA"
REBOLA A BOLA b/w WHEN I LOVE, I LOVE
Often spoofed, Carmen Miranda will always be remembered best for her outrageous outfits and ''bowl of fruit'' hat. Although she was Brazilian, Carmen was actually born in Portugal. Her family immigrated to Brazil when she was a child. An entertainer since her early days, she emerged as a popular singer and actress in her native land during the late 1920s and early 1930s. She had her first break in America with the 1939 Broadway musical The Streets of Paris, with Abbot and Costello.
Fresh off her success in Down Argentine Way, Carmen Miranda was rehired to bring her unique splash of exoticism to That Night in Rio. With all the campy homage and mimicry that her persona has inspired since (commercials, logos, drag show acts, etc.) it is easy to forget what a remarkable performer and screen presence she was in the time. Born in Portugal, the “Brazilian Bombshell” and her family moved to South America in her childhood. She had become a recording and movie star there before her American debut in Down Argentine Way. The fruit stuffed turbans, revealing blouses and flowing skirts became fashion trends in America soon after. Her fiery temper, comically broken English, malapropisms and smooth, rapturous samba numbers immediately endeared her to legions of fans. Unfortunately, the caricature that she rode to success would also define and limit her work throughout the 1940s. She died of a heart attack in 1955 shortly after filming a segment for The Jimmy Durante Show. It is still astonishing to realize how significant her influence on the cultural landscape was considering the brevity of her career.
