This live 1963 session, more than any other Carmen recording, convinced me that she belonged to the triumvirate of outstanding jazz vocalists of the time, rounded out by Ella and Sarah.
Her voice is not as high and light as the '50's Bethlehem and Decca recordings, but her expressive range is greater, and her interaction with her trio, led by pianist Norman Simmons, is a constant source of discovery and delight. The performance elicits as many emotional and poetic insights as sheer visceral responses to the irresistable groove of the trio, anchored by Victor Sproles' bass, but owing as much to Carmen's Sinatra-like instincts about time and phrasing.
Despite the uneven repertory, there isn't a lame performance on the session, especially given Carmen's transformation of some of the weaker contemporary songs of the day. But highlights include "Sunday" (I've never heard a more exhilarating treatment of the tune by anyone, including Carmen on some of her earlier and later recordings) and "It Never Entered My Mind." In fact, the latter tune is one I've used in music courses to demonstrate how a great song, when interpreted by a performer who is both a musician and a dramatic actress of the highest order, can be raised to the level of unassailable sublimity. (Simply listen to what Carmen does with phrasing and phonetics the second time she sings: "And now I even have to scratch my back myself.")
If "Live at Sugar Hill" isn't available or seems pricey, look for another recording from the same period (I would have to rate "Song Time" slightly above the later "Carmen McRae Sings the Great American Songbook.") Later in her career, as the smoking continued and the voice began to lower, Carmen would not have the breath support to handle pianissimos and nuances with the same command or to sustain her tones long enough to close them off with a pleasing vibrato effect.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners.
- Minor, faint water stain noted in one of the corners (less than 1/2 square inches in size)l (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (BARELY VISIBLE)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
