* sings The Great American Songbook * Dieses Album ist ein Juwel und und eines meiner liebsten von McRae. Es handelt sich um eine Live-Aufnahme für Atlantic Records in Dontes Club in Los Angeles vom 6. November 1971 und wurde im Folgejahr veröffentlicht.
Was ich daran so liebe, ist nicht nur die Auswahl der Songs, sondern auch die klangliche Qualität sowie die Darbietung selbst. Dies Set enthält nicht nur etablierte Standards von Ellington, Cole Porter und den anderen Großen, sondern auch einiges an (damals) neuem Material. Burt Bacharachs "They Long To Be Close To You" mit aufzunehmen war meiner Meinung nach eine kluge Entscheidung. Der Song verdient den Status eines Standards. Natürlich ist auch der obligatorische Billie Holiday Song dabei, der für McRae zu jedem ihrer Auftritte gehörte. Bei diesem Album ist das "I Cried For You", eine der ersten Plattenaufnahmen von Billie aus dem Jahre 1936.
Die Klangqualität ist hervorragend. Dem Toningenieur ist es nicht nur gelungen, die Energie der Live-Aufnahme einzufangen, sondern auch den Detailreichtum des Hintergrund-Ensembles von McRae. Tatsächlich passen die dafür ausgewählten Musiker perfekt zu den Stücken: Jimmy Rowles am Klavier (der "Ballad" für Thelonious Monk verfasst hat), Joe Pass an der Gitarre, Chuck Domanico am Bass und Chuck Flores am Schlagzeug.
Jeden, der gern einige der besten Songs aus dem Great American Songbook meisterhaft interpretiert hört, wird diese Platte entzücken. Es gibt einen Gruppenzusammenhalt bei diesem Album, der Achtung verdient, sowohl was das Produktionsteam als auch was die vortragenden Künstler betrifft. Interessanterweise haben McRae und ihr Ensemble 32 Songs im Laufe der Nacht dieser Aufnahme eingespielt. Man kann nur spekulieren, weshalb kein Volume II veröffentlicht wurde. Trotzdem handelt es sich hier – meiner Meinung nach – um eine der besten Live-Aufnahmen von Carmen McRae.

This is a gem of an album and one of my favorites by McRae. It was recorded live for Atlantic Records at Donte's Club in Los Angeles on November 6, 1971 and released the following year.
What I love is not only the choice of songs, but the sound quality and the performance itself. The set not only contains established standards by Ellington, Cole Porter and the other greats, but some new (at the time) material. Including Burt Bacharach's "They Long To Be Close To You" in the set was a wise decision in my opinion. It deserves to be a standard. Of course there is the obligatory Billie Holiday song that McRae would include in all of her performances. On this album it's "I Cried For You", which was one of Billie's first recordings in 1936.
The sound quality is superb. The engineer managed to capture not only the energy from the live performance, but the richness of the ensemble backing McRae. Indeed, the musicians backing her are perfect for the material: Jimmy Rowles on piano (who wrote the "Ballad" of Thelonious Monk), Joe Pass on guitar, Chuck Domanico on bass and Chuck Flores on drums.
If you love hearing some of the best songs from the Great American Songbook performed by a master this album will delight you. There is a cohesiveness to the album that earns kudos from the production team as well as the performers. Interestingly McRae and her ensemble performed 32 songs the night that this was recorded. One can only speculate as to why a volume 2 wasn't released. Regardless, this is - in my opinion - some of McRae's best live material.
