This original mono LP is most likely the only record on this label.  Jazz contralto, part torch singer and part blues-belter, intriguing and truly rare.

The cover has minor age and use, minor wear and handling, particularly at the corner points, faint beginning of ring wear, but one must look hard to recognize it. [Cover pictures used here are derived from internet 'stock photos']

Disc is like new, slight handling, no marks at all, perfectly shiny and glossy, and even with the black label, only one negligible spindle mark is detectable.

Who was Carol Brent, you may ask?

The album liner notes are by Russ Wilson, jazz critic of the Oakland Tribune newspaper, author of review columns 'World of Jazz' and 'Needle Talk', host of the weekly radio program 'Jazz Audition' on Berkeley, CA station KJAZ-FM. His impression of this artist is most enthusiastic, and in addition to hundreds of scholarly words about the music, the sidemen and Miss Brent's amazing voice, he also provides important biographical details about her.

Some facts gathered from the notes tells us that Miss Brent was a New Orleans native, obtained inspiration for her vocal phrasing by listening to Frank Sinatra on the radio, and began performing in the Vieux Carre at the Famous Door, and later at The Showboat. She married Lloyd Downton and retired from singing, but after they moved to Los Angeles, she began to perform at The Little Club in Beverly Hills. Gold Coast Records owner Jack Spinosa heard her singing on a Regal Select Beer commercial, met her manager-husband, and this album is the result.

On page 13 of the official record for the 1963 City Elections in San Francisco, California, is found this Candidate Statement:

For Supervisor:
CAROL BRENT DOWNTON
"I hereby declare myself a candidate for the of?ce of Supervisor for the City
and County of San Francisco, State of California, to be voted for at the General
Municipal Election to be held in the said City and County on Nov. 5, 1963, and.
declare the following to be true:
That I shall have been a resident of the City and County,_of San Francisco
for a period of at least ?ve years and an elector thereof for a period of at least
one year immediately prior to the time for taking such o?ice:
That my name is Carol Brent Downton. My residence address is at No. 530 - 8th Avenue, San Francisco;
My business or occupation is Singer.
My qualifications for said o?ice are as follows: I have been a keen observer
and student of local and state government for many years. What is more im-
portant, I have a deep and pervasive love for San Francisco. “Communication”
in all its semantical variations plays a major role in government. As a professional
vocalist I have to be an expert in communication. My primary qualification,
however, is a deep-rooted desire to make San Francisco a better place to love,
to live and to work.
Pursuant to the provisions of Section 175 of Charter of said City and County,
I desire that the following designation “Singer” be placed immediately under
my name as it will appear on all ballots at the General Municipal Election to be
held November 5, 1963."

One sees Willie Brown here as a sponsor, but there were also seven candidates for mayor in this election, including Spinosa and Treskunoff , and lots of people were signing one another's applications as sponsors!

I don't know how the Supervisor elections turned out -  but  John Shelley became the Mayor, ending fifty years of Republicans and beginning an unbroken run of Democratic SF mayors.

Finally in addition, and this might only be a coincidence, but a doll named Carol Brent was made by Ideal Toy Company and sold through Montgomery Wards catalogs in 1961 and 1962, possibly longer. She was 15.5" tall with rooted hair, and could be said to look slightly similar to Miss Brent's album cover photo. Separate outfits were also sold for this lovely fashion doll.
