CAROLE CAROOMPAS

 LA LUCHA LP

Private

Rare original issue, this is the second album from visual artist Carole Caroompas, with aid from Lafms collaborator and instrument builder Chas Smith.

Some info on the release:  Rare original issue, released in Usa sometime in the late 80's privately by the artist in collaboration with Lafms collaborator Chas Smith (in Stillife together with Dennis Duck, Michael Jon Fink, Michael Le Donne-Bhennet, Tom Recchion) that appeared also in the great Cold Blue Records series. Carole Caroompas is also known for her participation in the "High Performance - The Record (Artists Doing Songs)" album.

Carole Caroompas was already a well-established painter when she began devising performances to compliment her visual art, mostly paintings full of text and collage. She was an attractive young woman with a buttery, real voice, and one gets the sense that performance would have figured into her career with or without the burgeoning scene happening around her.

Her first album was "Target Practice", a cycle of eight songs first performed by Caroompas late 1981 at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, and again at various galleries over the following year. Standing in front of an elaborate wall full of diagrammatic images and text that resembled one of her paintings blown up to wall size, Caroompas would sing along to a prerecorded soundtrack of Casio notes, metronomes and handclaps, found sounds, and multiple tracks of her own voice. Caroompas wore a black dress with a pearl necklace-- demure above leopard print high heel boots. Without a stage to look down from and no microphone to amplify her voice, she would captivate audiences with an mix of song and spoken interludes about the history of archery and the scientific discoveries of Archimedes. Owing to space restrictions, the interludes were not included on the album of the show, which ran over an hour in length. Each song begun with the sound of arrows hitting a target, one after another. It's not pop music. Caroompas had produced 250 copies of this album with silkscreened covers and paste-on colored feathers. The songs are mostly about relationships, desire, power, bad boys, and communication or lack thereof.

The collage esthetic animates the vibrant, piquant work of L.A. artist Carole Caroompas. Caroompas is chiefly known for her work of the last 10 years: large-scale allegorical paintings that update the sexual and moral conflicts of characters from fairy tales, fiction and classic fiction--figures such as Rapunzel, King Arthur, Frankenstein, Salome, Hester Prynne and Zorro. Part structuralist, part fabulist, Caroompas spins taught narrative webs around these characters, collaging images that depict their literary dilemmas with graphic images taken from anthropological photographs, advertising. The resulting visual cacophonies transcend push-button feminism, presenting a kind of turn call of types and behaviors that look to underlie the continued toil between the sexes.

Caroompas's various series describe a range of romantic experience, limited single by chance and the culturally determined governments of the game. The backgrounds for the "Hermetic Romance" collages, in fact, consist of imaginary game boards, ranging from a chessboard grid to a fantasy adventure locate in outer space. The works' comic visual and semantic rhyme bring to mind John Baldessari's photo collages, which feature circular images taken from film-noir stills, science textbook comics and travel guides. Caroompas's mix of imagery indicates possible "moves" in the various "rounds" of romance.

Condition: Vinyl lies in mint condition, looks super clean and plays perfectly, while cover lies also in mint shape, looks untouched by the hands of the time (see picture).
