This first Lp (very different from the 2nd) from the performance artist Carole Caroompas is surely what might be called a masterpiece of diy minimal pop and synth wave sound poetry. 

The sarcastic but poetic lyrics balance perfectly the sweet and very minimal casio tones and beats.

Target Practice (1982)

Carole Caroompas was already an established painter when she began devising performances to compliment her paintings full of text and collage.

Target Practice is a cycle of eight songs first performed by Caroompas late 1981 at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, and again at various galleries over the following year. Standing in front of an elaborate wall full of diagrammatic images and text that resembled one of her paintings blown up to wall size, she sang along to a prerecorded soundtrack of Casio notes, metronomes and handclaps, found sounds, and multiple tracks of her own voice. With no stage to look down from and no microphone to amplify her voice, she captivated audiences with an mix of song and spoken interludes about the history of archery and the scientific discoveries of Archimedes. Each song begins with the sound of arrows hitting a target, one after another. It's not pop music.

Caroompas produced 250 copies of the album with silkscreened covers and paste-on colored feathers. The songs -- chants really -- are mostly about relationships, desire, power, bad boys, and communication or lack thereof. Carole will kill me for saying this, but it's almost as if the 70s Joni Mitchell SSW (singer-songwriter) tradition crash landed in the LA art scene, with her strange effects and sarcastic putdowns as cover for the more personal, conventional thrust of the work. In my favorite track, 'The Baby-Classic,' Caroompas directly, beautifully confronts her disappointments as a woman / artist / lover:

I had great expectations about almost everything (counting 1234)
And I had high ideals for almost anything (1234)
And I thought things could be perfect once you paid your dues (1234)
But most of all, I had great expectations about you (1234).

Caroompas creatively finds entertaining new ways to tell old stories about romantic life in the big city. The album is sincere and funny, and never too hip for its own good. It's hard not to like a record that starts with the artist telling the leering men who harass her on her way to her studio on Hollywood Boulevard: "Eat shit and die, you leaky dick."

Probably the most unique and unassuming record I purchased at the 2008 WFMU record fair. Housed in a plain sleeve with a screen printed bird and real feathers waxed-on to the cover, Carole Caroompas’ only record from 1981 is a sure winner for fans of minimal pop. Carole is/was an established L.A. visual artist who started performing these minimal compositions in front of her work at various galleries. Using a back-drop of Casio ‘beast’, hand-claps, and percussive inventiveness she eventually stepped into a studio and walked out with 250 copies of her music.

When I pulled the record my friend Douglas was standing next to me. His first description was hilariously memorable: “I feel like the only person in the world who likes this record. Every song starts with an arrow hitting its target and then goes into some very minimal pop.” I had no idea that his record label Yoga Records reissued it digitally (you can listen and grab it from Other Music by clicking HERE.)

I took Target Practice home and it immediately impressed itself upon me. It seemed to enter this weird space in my mind. The songs were so bare and simple and grew with each listen, yet I found myself at a complete loss when describing it. “Well, uh, it’s just, like, minimal. Very minimal. But poppy. And weird. It’s unique. Yes, very unique. And, uh, well, you just need to listen to it.” And I’d proceed to play it, almost always to positive reactions from my friends. Why? Probably because it is incredibly unique. Its personal and endearing, but not in a patronizing way. You feel affectionately towards it because from the packaging, lyrics, and sound-scapes it’s obviously a very personal artifact from a highly creative individual.In sum, Target Practice is a record without reference, precious in its simplicity, and worthy of seeking for any fan of interesting sounds.

M (MINT)

Sealed, never played, new in its original packaging.

NM (NEAR MINT)

Almost perfect copy, never or very rarely played. At worst, one or two surface marks, generally insignificant and due to inner sleeve. This the highest grade for an unsealed record.

EX (EXCELLENT)

Very clean copy, some insignificant surfaces marks (hairlines). This record has been rarely played, on good equipment and treated with care. The cover has very minor flaws: a name or discrete initials, low wear corners, very slight ringwear.

VG + + (VERY GOOD + +)

More surface marks.Minor flaws or cover wear, minor edge wear. This is generally the grade given to a 20 to 50 years old record with a "normal" life, treated with care, but listened and handled regularly by his former owner.

VG + (VERY GOOD +)

Has been played a lot, shows multiple slight surface marks (hairlines) generating background noise between songs but no jump or skips. Cover shows important signs of age and storage (slice corners worn, name, date, dedication, tears, etc. ...). Generally, this record was one of the favorites among previous owner discotheque , went from hand to hand, had to animate some parties and bears the scars of a busy life.

VG (VERY GOOD)

The record is very worn, has been played a lot, shows important scratches that are creating permanent background noises but do not skip or jump. Still listenable (especially at high volume for big sound). The cover is well worn, torn important corner and edge wear, significant traces of marker pen or ... well, the previous grade but more accentuated.

G (GOOD)

Has been played to the hilt (but still playable on some titles), many scratches, crackles a lot while playing, may have jumps or sticks. The cover is very damaged. This record must be very rare to be proposed on sale !
