The legendary first family of Country music is remarkable in that all the hyperbole and exaggeration about them is actually well-founded. In fact, as scholars have begun to seriously explore their career and influence, it seems apparent that Country music owes even more to them than the casual fan believes. They gave to the music dozens of songs which became standards, ranging all the way from "I’m Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes" to T"he Wabash Cannon Ball."
They gave to Country music a pattern for harmony singing that still inspires singers as diverse as Vince Gill and Bill Monroe. Their melodies, among the most haunting and singable in any music, have appealed to everyone from Roy Acuff to Woody Guthrie. Maybelle’s "Carter lick" on the guitar has become the most influential technique in the music’s history.
Their 350-plus recordings made between 1927 and 1941 form a body of collected works that reached every corner of the world. And though the original Carter Family broke up in 1943, their daughters and cousins have carried on the music in a wonderful variety of ways. [Charles K. Wolfe ]
This single features songs from two different sessions for Victor. The song “Carter’s Blues” was cut on November 24, 1929, while the flipside, “Lover’s Farewell” is from a session on May 24, 1930.
