Rarity: Very first issues are elusive on the pink label, it was one of the very last new albums issued on that format. Pink rim copies are relatively common, but condition is the most important factor. A delicate album that demands a top pressing and only minimal careful usage – this copy more than qualifies – it plays very impressively throughout.

Brief Info: With the rarity of the pink Island first pressing, many collectors are more than happy to settle for a Pink Rim pressing, and this is a very nice example which is still very early (as confirmed by the run out information above). For me the ultimate Cat Stevens album, a record of incredible beauty and including several outstanding and memorable songs. A man at his musical peak, no music lover could fail to be moved by this beautiful music. The man in supreme voice and including the most perfect production with full backing. His real breakthrough album and a true classic. Packaged in gorgeous cover, this record proves beyond any doubt what an exceptional singer-songwriter this man is and every record collection should include this truly memorable record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back lamination, the inside now is matt and smooth. Printed and made by Euro Albums Holland BV, includes the blue polylined basing street Island inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides impressive with excellent shine, freshness and clarity. Minimal dulling, even under light, no lifting and any of the very few small creases fine and faint. Avoiding any knocks or scuffs, this artwork looks fantastic, this will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Beautifully dark artwork, this has hardly anything to fault, the odd minor edge crease, little else.

Top Edges: Straight, smooth, flush with nothing to fault.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal hint of wear or thickening, a trace near the bottom of the front inside, little else, all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Both sides are open, the front possibly unstuck, but scant evidence of any inside adhesive. Either way, these will not prove easy to find neat or flatter.

Spine and Text: A magnificent spine: very solid and straight with barely any compression. All the text is pristine perfect and unworn under the solid, clear and unpeeled laminate that remains ultra smooth to the touch. Also nicely centred to good measure.

Corners: All impressively crisp and sharp and nigh-on free of wear with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A lovely example of this classic Island cover, one to please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): the blue Island basing street text inner has quite gently aged with a little darkening of the seam adhesive and some narrow edge scuffing to the back left lower edge area. Minimal creasing, a little crinkle and polyling intact, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with any surface marks very fine and wispy as seen more critically under bright light. Viewd in average natural room light, barely anything registers, there are no penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality is clean and impressive. A very clean record that retains fine shine, freshness and very solidly pressed in the UK for Island. A quality early pink rim pressing to please many collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The odd sporadic tick or trace near impossible to avoid totally on vintage quieter albums like this, but few available copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The wispy surface blemishes probably the result of cloth ‘cleaning’ and totally harmless. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
