Although the Gennett record firm (Starr Piano company) discontinued their flagship label Gennett in 1930, they continued to record, press and sell records, in very small quantities, until 1934. The label they continued, Champion, was changed from gold on red to gold on black. Many sides were recorded, but very few of each title were pressed....some thought to be as few as 100-200 pressings per title. It is thought that dance band and jazz issues from this period (of Gennett issuance through the Champion label) are more scarce then the country issues. Some are known to exist today in as few as 4-6 copies.

In late 1934, Decca took over the Gennett pressing facilities and no more records were pressed by the Gennett firm. The last Gennett Champions were recorded October 25, 1934. Decca continued to sell old Champion stock, as I have seen Gennett pressed Champions in Decca Champion sleeves.
Also, Decca revived the Champion label (in it's red and gold color scheme) in 1935 as a reissue label for Gennett material and as a specialty line.

The record I am offering for sale here is a mythically rare Champion issue from the last days of the Gennett firm. Although it was recorded February 5, 1934, at Paul Cornelius' last session, it sounds more like a band from the early 1930s (say 1931-1932). The first side is a very peppy Fox Trot dance side, Rhymes, containing risque lyrics full of double entendres and local mid-western references. The second side is a sweet Fox Trot dance side in the mold of the popular early 1930s dance bands like Anson Weeks. It is from the Dick Powell movie "College Coach" and is sung by vocalist Clyde Kissinger.

Recorded: Richmond, Indiana, February 5, 1934

Orchestra: Paul Cornelius & his Orch. Vocal, Clyde Kissinger . Musicians unknown. (Check Brian Rust's American Dance Band Discography for more info.)

Condition: E to E+ (Very near store stock (possibly is), a few very light handling scuffs and marks, no groove wear, labels are perfect. Very shiny beautiful condition.) Comes in the old Champion sleeve it came with. I do not know if it is original to the record but I think it might be.

While the record says "Champion Records, Richmond Indiana", the sleeve says "Decca Records". This makes me think that Decca was trying to dispose of the unsold Gennett / Champion stock before they began pressing their own records. Just a theory though, no proof. This was definitely recorded and pressed at the Gennett studios however, as Rust's Discography checks out and the recording quality is below the industry standard for 1934 !!! (sounds about like a late Paramount).

Record Grades:

A / sign denotes different grades for each side.

E+  Plays perfectly and looks very shiny and nearly new. No Wear

E   Very shiny, a few very light scuffs or scratches possible. No visible wear

E-  A mostly Excellent record.
Has minor defects that should not be audible when played. Still  Shiny. A few light scuffs and might have slight wear.


V++  A Little more wear and scuffing than an E-, but still a very nice record.

V+  Still a good amount of shine, some scuffing, light scratching and light wear. Still a very enjoyable record that plays well.


V  Plays OK, music not harmed by noise, but there is some. Scuffing, light to moderate scratching, and light to moderate groove wear.

V- Surface noise noticeable, but not to the point that it overwhelms the music. Full of random mars and light abrasions. Moderate groove wear possible. Along with scuffing and scratching. It will still play. Minor defects might include digs and edge chips (not in the grooves)

G  Playable but annoying. Possesses significant groove wear and scratching/scuffing. A good filler copy.

F Very worn, Might not be playable

P  A Bad record.
Trashed out by defects.  Probably unplayable with any enjoyment.
