The first LP ever issued on the End label was a natural product of the success of "Maybe," one of the great ballads to come out of the rock & roll boom and one of the most beloved R&B singles ever to emanate from the orbit of label owner George Goldner. For the album, all Goldner did was assemble the two sides of each of the existing six Chantels singles, but it's still a pretty impressive body of music, a fact that makes it a tribute to producer Richard Barrett. "Maybe" is the best song here, to be sure, with a career-making performance by Arlene Smith, but the rest of the album is not to be ignored: "The Plea" (co-authored by Smith and Barrett), which offers shimmering backing vocals by the group and a memorably passionate lyric; the radiant "Come My Little Baby," with its exquisite chorus and a honking sax solo thick enough to cut with a knife; the bluesy "Congratulations," with its "lead" bass instrumental arrangement; the ethereal ballads "Prayee," "He's Gone," and "I Love You So" -- even Richard Barrett's attempt to emulate "Maybe," "Every Night (I Pray)," is worth hearing as a refinement and expansion of the hit. [Note: This album was originally released as We Are the Chantels, with an image of the five-member group on the cover; such were the racial sensitivities of the time, however, that it was withdrawn and reissued in 1959 with the same catalog number and the title The Chantels, packaged in a more innocuous cover depicting two white teenagers standing next to a jukebox.]

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD-, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist (except on compact disc)

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top and bottom seams; These two split seams were delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape (one on each seam)

-        Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        A faint water stain affects the area about 1 inch wide along the top seam and opening side (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY); there is no damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible

-        Front cover has a few pressure points and lines (as if someone attempted to write on it with the ballpoint pen, but ran out of ink) [the cover has to be viewed under certain angle to notice this]

-        Cover has some faint, faded writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in faded blue ballpoint pen, about 1½ x 2 inches in size)

-        Back cover has a small sticker /label, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
