This excellent two-LP (*** See Seller notes below) set features Charles Mingus and his 1970 sextet (with trumpeter Eddie Preston, altoist Charles McPherson, tenor-saxophonist Bobby Jones, pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Dannie Richmond) stretching out on three of the bassist/leader's standards along with his more recent "Love Is a Dangerous Necessity," a version of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and a 17-minute version of "Blue Bird" (a Charlie Parker blues). Practically Mingus's only studio recordings of 1965-71, these performances find the great bassist in fine form, pushing his sidemen to make original statements on the distinctive originals.
*** Seller Notes: The French label, America Records (Yes, a French label) released two Mingus albums in 1971 (Blue Bird and Pithycanthropus Erectus) for Musidisc-Europe that were printed by Imprimerie Polychrome.  As referenced above in Scott Yanow's review Prestige had compiled and released a double LP set with the same tracks the year before. This listing is for Blue Bird and Pithycanthropus Erectus can be found in another of my eBay listings).
