Description
Up for auction is a nice copy of the rare Charles Mingus album "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus" released on Impulse Records (A-54) in 1964. This is a guaranteed, original mono first pressing, with "VanGelder" stamped in both run-out grooves. Very rare mono pressing, as most you will find are re-processed stereo. Original gatefold cover, and original Impulse factory paper inner sleeve. Also comes with poly-vinyl audiophile protective inner sleeve.
Cover is in very nice condition. Front retains its original high gloss laminated shine, with only very minor signs of rubbing anywhere. No real signs of ring wear. Corners are sharp, though upper right does have a minor bump (see photo). Very small factory punch hole in lower left corner. Seams are strong and intact, no splits, no cracks. Spine is beautiful, bright, and lettering is clear, no creasing from repeated opening and closing. Back cover is also very clean, with only the smallest amount of rubbing along opening. Slight crease at top middle. Inside gatefold is clean, no ring wear or age discoloration. Does have a tiny tear on upper middle right side, though it's not really distracting in any way. Overall, a very attractive, clean cover. I'd grade it as Excellent/Excellent Plus (EX/EX+).
Vinyl is also in very nice condition. Retains is original high gloss luster. No deep or obvious scratches or scuffs, though it does have a couple very light marks on both sides from handling--but they don't affect the quality of the playback that I can tell. Also, some very faint hairlines probably from taking the vinyl in and out of the original paper inner sleeve. Labels look bright and clean, with only minimal signs of previous play. I've play tested this record, and overall it produces a very nice, full-bodied mono sound, as you'd expect from these heavy vinyl original Impulse pressings. Not audiophile clean, or near mint, it does play with some very minor surface noise at the beginning of each side, but tends to fade out as the music kicks in. An occasional very light click every now and then, but hardly distracting. Still a very enjoyable listening experience. Should be played in mono mode for maximum audio quality playback--stereo mode tends to artificially accentuate any imperfections. Overall, I'd grade the vinyl as Excellent (EX).
