In 1983 Mosaic launched an endeavor whose objective was to assemble and reissue definitive collections of particular artists or groups which cover their work during a certain phase of their career. These collections not only included published recordings but also alternative takes and even numbers that for various reasons were never released. These reissues came in 12' x 12' boxed sets that included extensive liner notes and a complete discography that proved to be of great value to serious jazz lovers and collectors. Originally issued in LP form, early on Mosaic added CD's which today are their major offering.
In the 1980's I began to collect these Mosaic sets feeling that eventually they would attract great interest among collectors. At this time I have decided to disperse my collection of over 80 albums all of which were acquired directly from Mosaic.
The album listed herein is a four record box set of recordings made by Charles Mingus in 1959 for the CBS label. Mosaic's liner notes state that "the justly famous tracks enclosed herewith represent one of the artistic summits of Charles Mingus's career". Those of you interested in this individualistic artist will find the liner notes unusally extensive and informative.
The records included in this set may be designated as new since they have never been played. The box is near mint except for a fairly minor scratch across the cover art (see picture). The booklet containing the liner notes and discography is in near mint condition.
