Here's a very rare US original copy of CHARLES (CHARLIE) ROUSE - Two Is One
originally released in 1974 on "Strata East records #SES-19746...

This album impressed the hell out of me. I was expecting a heavy funky jazz break-beat album,
but there was much more to it, and it turned out to be loads better than I was expecting.
Side one is definitely the funk jazz side, but it's when you flip it over the magic of what you're
listening to starts to kick in. The real high point on here for me is "Two Is One", a 12 plus minute
epic which is two very separate pieces, but put together make for one hell of a musical experience.
The whole tune is powered by Stanley Clarke's solid driving bass, and in the first half there some
wild cello work from Calo Scott that is pretty unusual for a jazz track. The whole thing just keeps
coming at you like an out of control truck. Real squirrel in headlights stuff. The final track "In His
Presence Searching" starts of in some really weird style, sort of feels a little bit haunting, not in
a soothing mellow way, but more of a scare the life out of you way. The cello thing on here really
does add some major spookiness the thing. Side two of this album is really good in that the tunes
are broken up into very different styles, kind of like they were suites or something.

Two Is One is quite a bit straighter than a lot of stuff from the Strata-East label, but it doesn't suffer in any way for it. I totally enjoyed every moment of it and can really recommend it to any jazzer.

VG+ = overall wear, but no skips of serious defects, more noisy sound during quiet passages…
sleeve is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear.
VG = plays a lot, heavy wear on record and cover…guarantee does not apply to vg- or worse
condition records.
