CHARLIE MINGUS ‘CHAZZ!” ORIGINAL 1962 MONO VOCALION LAE 543 (DECCA PRESSED) DEEP GROOVE VINYL LP IN LAMINATED FLIPBACK SLEEVE
Sleeve Condition: A touch of laminate lifting at spine, light wear, still an Ex condition sleeve with no damage or defect and entirely free from stickers or previous owner?s marks or names.
Record Condition: Ex+, almost Near Mint; a bit of ?ssh? on the run in grooves, plays fine throughout though with simply superb sound. Recordings of this quality on vinyl from this ear have never been equalled let alone surpassed. Lovely collector?s item as most of these even when they do turn op are shot to pieces. This has obviously been very well cared for and very little played.
The Jazz Workshop of 1955 is in superb form, caught in performance at the Caf Bohemia in New York. Max Roach only appears for a "Percussion Discussion" with Mingus, but the forgotten Willie Jones is no slouch either. A typically adventurous set of tunes includes two montages. ("Septemberly" combines "September in the Rain" and "Tenderly", while "All the Things You Can C-Sharp" is a blend of "All the Things You Are," Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in C-Sharp" and "Clair de Lune.") It's a very spirited date, ranking with his best work in the period.
