VOLUME FOUR (Dual 207 incorrectly identified on cover sticker as VOLUME THREE) by The Charlie Parker Sextet (1950, Dial Records - Out of Print, rare promo jacket)

Here's an unusual rarity for Charlie Parker collectors. This pressing of Dial 207 is one I've never seen before.

Front Cover: The jacket appears to be a pre-release promo with a textured blank cover featuring only the dial logo and an orange sticker stating "Dial 207, Volume Three, Charlie Parker." The front cover is textured (hard to tell in the photo). The sticker on the cover INCORRECTLY identifies Dial 207 as Volume Three. Dial 207 is actually Volume Four, Dial 203 was actually Volume Three.

Back Cover: The back cover is a listing of Dial jazz releases. Here, Dial 207 is correctly identified as Volume Four.

Label: Unlike the jacket, the label is not different from the official 1950 commercial release. The base colors are orange and yellow. White print to the left of the hole says "33 1/3 RPM," white print to the right of the hole says "Microgroove LP," white print at the bottom perimeter says "Contemporary Classics." Song and personnel listings are in black print. Side B of the label is very clean, Side A of the label has some dirt visible on it (visible in scan).

Condition of jacket: I would give the front cover a VG rating and the back a VG+. Seams are tight, although the bottom seam is beginning to split at the point where the record touches the jacket and at the right edge where the opening is (not too noticeable, but it's there). The front of the jacket shows some discoloration and soiling, especially near the edges, probably due to the textured quality the cardboard. There is also what looks like residue from an old price sticker to the left of the dial logo. These flaws are visible in the scan. The back of the jacket is mostly clean, showing minor wear and some light soiling. There are no pen marks or stickers.

Condition of vinyl: Side B is very clean with brilliant luster, but has some minor scuffing and a few very light stylus scratches, none deep. I would grade this VG++. Side A is also clean with brilliant luster, but there are a few more light scratches on this side so I would give Side A a VG.

Because this is an unusual version of this classic record, I have found no mention if it in price guides and so have decided to let you collectors determine it's worth. The opening bid for this record is one cent with no reserve. Good luck!

One of a handful of musicians who can be said to have permanently changed jazz, Charlie Parker was arguably the greatest saxophonist of all time. He could play remarkably fast lines that, if slowed down to half speed, would reveal that every note made sense. "Bird," along with his contemporaries Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell, is considered a founder of bebop; in reality he was an intuitive player who simply was expressing himself. Rather than basing his improvisations closely on the melody as was done in swing, he was a master of chordal improvising, creating new melodies that were based on the structure of a song. In fact, Bird wrote several future standards (such as "Anthropology," "Ornithology," "Scrapple from the Apple," and "Ko Ko," along with such blues numbers as "Now's the Time" and "Parker's Mood") that "borrowed" and modernized the chord structures of older tunes. Parker's remarkable technique, fairly original sound, and ability to come up with harmonically advanced phrases that could be both logical and whimsical were highly influential. By 1950, it was impossible to play "modern jazz" with credibility without closely studying Charlie Parker.
