This album suffers from the same problems as its' "companion", "Bird on 52nd Street". Those are all derived from the fact that the performance was recorded in a bootleg fashion and the recorder was often turned off as soon as Parker stopped playing. Parker is much more robust and clear, however, he and the Max Roach drown out the rest of the band almost entirely. The plus? Well, Parker is in fantastic form. His soloing is in its prime and he absolutely burns. His playing simply overwhelms all of the technical shortcomings. Newcomers should check out one of the many collections of Parker material before tackling this recording. Longtime fans will want to hear this and add one star just because most everything on record from this period of Parker's music is vital!

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in thin red marker, about 1 x 2 inches in size)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine (this affects ONLY the paper slick, not the cardboard base)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Back cover has a few reddish ink specks scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has two tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner. These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.
