Original three-LP box set, with two 7-inch singles on Fresh Sound Records (1986). A limited-edition issue, this box set was withdrawn from the market within months of its initial release, due to licensing issues.
Includes an eight-page facsimile of a 1955-56 Chet Baker tour programme.
"This excellent 1986 compilation on the Spanish quality jazz label Fresh Sound is fairly unique in that it contains all the master takes issued on the records that Baker cut in Paris for Eddie Barclay (...) presented here in their entirety without the ballast of any additional tracks or alternate takes, making this a perfect complete no-nonsense release.
The first of these albums is perhaps the most famous, as it was recorded with Dick Twardzik only a few days before his death and is a showcase of his angular piano playing, as Baker improvises slightly skewed solos over somewhat avant-gardish Bob Zieff compositions. The second was recorded with French studio musicians a few days after Twardzik's death and the subsequent departure of drummer Peter Littman, and contains treatments of eight standards, whereas the third is the product of numerous sessions that stretched from October 1955 to February 1956.
All of them show Baker maturing, and all of them show him alert and attentive. These recordings stand well in their own right, and they would provide the foundation for his excellent collaborations with Art Pepper and Russ Freeman after his return to the USA in 1956." - From a review by hprill, rateyourmusic.com
