CHICAGO BLUES 45: AL PERKINS Love Me Baby/Mickey w/ LUTHER TUCKER, WILLIE DIXON
Salem 61-199. Love Me Baby is similar to some Otis Rush records produced by Willie Dixon, who plays bass on this 1961 session. It is also related to Dixon’s Let Me Love You Baby recorded by Buddy Guy. Luther Tucker, a onetime Otis Rush band member, is on guitar, with Lafayette Leake on piano, and the saxophone player whose name gives the instrumental flip side its title is Mickey Boss (Conway). Perkins was a singer and bassist who became a DJ and producer. His siblings or half-siblings included Mickey Boss, Delta bluesman James “Son” Thomas and their sister Velma, who made some soul records as Vee Allen after she married singer Na Allen, brother of Denise LaSalle. The Salem 45 is credited to J. [Jimmie] Engram, published by Dixon's Ghana Music company; another issue on the Jive label was credited to Ingram [sic] and Perkins, and subsequently only to Perkins on the U.S.A. label. (In a similar pathway that began with other writers, Perkins ended up with co-writing credit on the Otis Rush 45 “Homework.”) Perkins was murdered in Detroit in 1983.

GRADING: LPs, EPs and 45s are graded M (mint), NM (near mint), VG+, VG (very good), VG-, G+, G (good), G-, F (fair), and P (poor).
A VG+ record may have some visible scuffs and light scratches and plays well with little surface noise. Scratches on records graded VG and VG- may be deep enough to feel with your fingernail, or there may be scuffs or scratches throughout that cause surface noise. On records in the G+, G and G- range the level of the music is still above the surface noise caused by scuffs and scratches. Surface noise is as loud as the music on records graded F and louder than the music on P records. P records are likely to be unplayable.
