Wenn es so etwas wie Cumbia Kings gäbe, sollte die Krone vermutlich an die chilenische Gruppe Chico Trujillo gehen. Vor fünfzehn Jahren, in der Kleinstadt Villa Aleman, ein paar Meilen von Valparaiso, begann Chico Trujillo zusammen mit Aldo "Macha" Asenjo und den Mitgliedern seiner Punk/Ska-Gruppe La Floripondio alte chilenische und kolumbianische Cumbia Hits zu spielen. Diese Versammlungen verwandelte sich bald in eine Tourband, die den Sommer in Berlin verbrachte, wo sie ihre tropischen Koteletts verfeinerten. Schließlich nahmen sie am Vive Latino teil; der Hollywood Bowl und Lollapollooza, wo sie Jon Pareles von der New York Times "eine Weltklasse-Partyband" nannte und alles Weitere seinen Lauf nahm. Einige Welttourneen und sechs Alben später symbolisieren Chico Trujillo einen einzigartigen chilenischen Cocktail.
