Choking Victim: Artist Overview
Choking Victim was an American punk band from New York City, active primarily from 1992 to 1998. A cornerstone of the city's Lower East Side squatting scene, the band was known for its raw, confrontational sound and anarcho-political stance. They are widely credited with pioneering the "crack rock steady" subgenre, a unique fusion of ska-punk, crust punk, and hardcore punk with a distinctly raw, lo-fi aesthetic. The band's music was a reflection of the urban decay and political frustration of the time, characterized by fast, aggressive guitar riffs, a prominent bass presence, and the frenetic drumming of Skwert, all topped with the distinctive, often raspy vocals of frontman Scott "Stza" Sturgeon.
Despite their short-lived career and a discography consisting of only a handful of EPs and a single full-length album, No Gods, No Managers, Choking Victim's impact on the punk and ska scenes was immense. Their lyrical themes were unapologetically radical and anti-establishment, addressing issues like homelessness, police brutality, drug use, corporate greed, and anti-religious sentiment.
