Description
Russell Stepan - PIANO FIREWORKS (of Chopin) - 2LP Limited Edition Direct-to-Disc Gatefold - Sonic Arts Laboratory Series No. 1 - EXTREMELY RARE & FINE!
Definitely one of the most unusually fine direct-to-disc productions ever undertaken.
The music is that of Chopin, his FANTASIE IMPROMPTU IN C MINOR and POLONAISE IN A FLAT MAJOR, as played by Russell Stepan.
It's a two-disc set that actually has you start with side 4. That side is a test record of sorts, that provides a full set of frequencies from 15kHz down to 30Hz, all set at zero db so you can "zero out" your system. Then on that same side, excerpts are provided, now that you are zeroed, of Stepan's playing. You will be quite taken by it, but know, that what you hear so excellently is the master tape version of his playing, not at all the direct-cut.
That's what the other three sides provide:
Side 1 is direct-cut with close micing of the piano in a bare 40' by 45' by 20' ceiling room. Side 2 offers up the very same direct cutting, only with the mics pulled back 9'. Then side 3, my favorite, though you may disagree, has the mics 9' back, in a figure-eight position, the floor fully carpeted.
A very fine idea---an experience, actually---super well executed, which makes this an audiophile/music lover treat, beginning to end.
Do note that only 1750 record sets were ever produced, this being number 524.
Jacket is faultless and crisp, like new, both records within play near mint.
Unlike anything you have in your vinyl library, I promise you.
