By the time Christian Death recorded their first album in Los Angeles in 1982, the city's hardcore scene was already splintering into stranger shapes. Fronted by teenage Rozz Williams and anchored by Rikk Agnew's serrated guitar work, the group pushed punk into something more theatrical, more unnerving, and harder to pin down. 'Cavity - First Communion' opens with a stark, ritual beat, then 'Figurative Theatre' and 'Burnt Offerings' scrape forward with a type of unstable momentum. 'Romeo's Distress' sharpens into clipped urgency, 'Spiritual Cramp' into repetitive and insistent territory. The demos and alternate takes included here only underline how quickly it came together. It still sounds like a rupture.
