On offer is a copy of the 1969 LP by CHRISTY MOORE called PADDY ON THE ROAD on MERCURY, catalogue number 20170 SMCL.
A legendary lost album, this was Christy Moore’s first. Only 500 copies were pressed, and then the master tapes were destroyed and the album immediately deleted. Dominic Behan was the mentor figure here, as co-producer, co-arranger on all the traditional tunes, and author of three of the songs, “The Belfast Brigade”, “The Strike Weapon” and the matchlessly beautiful “Avondale”. The sleeve-notes refer to Moore as “an ex-bank clerk from Kildare… now based in Halifax, Yorkshire.”
The record is in excellent condition, and has only one previous owner, who bought it on release and played it twice (he didn’t like it). It just falls short of mint. I counted six clicks during “Avondale” and some crackle at the start of side two on “Spanish Lady”. There is a click between “Belfast Brigade” and “Cricklewood”.
All these blemishes are undoubtedly the result of dust, owing to the album’s long storage, and a professional clean will clear all of them.
The sleeve is in excellent minus condition, with two nicks on the upper edge of the front cover, slight wear around the edges, some ringwear on the back and some fading and grubbiness around the edges of the back. See photos.
The original poly lined inner has the catalogue number “20170 SMCL” hand-printed in ink in the top right-hand corner.
