If you had to sweat all of Chuck Berry's early albums on Chess (and some, but not all, of his subsequent greatest-hits packages), this would be the one to own. The song lineup is exemplary, cobbling together classics like "Maybellene," "Carol," "Sweet Little Rock & Roller," "Little Queenie," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Around and Around," "Johnny B. Goode," and "Almost Grown." With the addition of the Latin-flavored "Hey Pedro," the steel guitar workout "Blues for Hawaiians," "Anthony Boy," and "Jo Jo Gunne," this serves as almost a mini-greatest-hits package in and of itself. While this may be merely a collection of singles and album ballast (as were most rock & roll LPs of the 1950s and early '60s), it ends up being the most perfectly realized album of Chuck Berry's career.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you are at ground zero of Rock'n'Roll's birth. This is the virgin spring of all of R&R: Chuck Berry not only single-handedly invented the entire R&B genre, he not only patented what is probably the single most memorable of all R&R body movements and chord changes , but he also acted as a midwife at Rock's birth.This is his finest Chess album, and his shining hour. Track listing: Almost grown - Carol - Maybelline - Sweet Little Rock'n'Roller - Anthony Boy - Johnny B.Goode - Little Queenie - Jo Jo Gun - Roll Over Bethoven - Around and around - Hey Pedro - Blues for Hawaiians. If I were to list all the artists who performed these songs, eBay would probably charge me extra, because this ad would simply too long. Suffice to say: Beatles, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix…and many, many, many more are in this bunch.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Back cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No saw-marks or indents
