Some of our friends swear that the backing band on this, Chuck Berry's last "classic" Rock & Roll album was none other than the Rolling Stones. We find the argument somewhat credible: Certainly, technically this is possible: Rolling Stones were present, right there and then, at Chess’ Ter-Mar recording studios around the time this album came out, and they rubbed their shoulders with Chess R&B and R&R giants, Chuck Berry included. Also, the slide guitar on some tracks sounds eerily resemblant of that of Brian Jones. But this is still a mere speculation. Finally, the Rolling Stones are conspicuously mentioned in the liner notes to the album; we don't know for sure, and we may never know who plays (uncredited) behind Chuck Berry on this album. What we do know is that we have one superb, classic Berry album here, probably the very last in the string of classic Chess albums he recorded starting with the 1957 "After School Sessions". Track listing: It wasn't me - Run, Joe - Every day we Rock'n'Roll - One for my baby - Welcome back, pretty baby - It's my own business - Right off Rampart Street - Vaya con Dios - Merrily we Rock'n Roll - My Mustang Ford - Ain't that just like a woman - Wee hours blues

***

Berry's last album for Chess, for the next four years, has him back in the U.S., and running smack in the mid-'60s blues revival, playing with the likes of Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield (who were beginning a brief but productive association with Muddy Waters around this time). The material varies from first-rate songs ("It Wasn't Me," "My Mustang Ford," "Ain't That Just Like a Woman") that sound utterly contemporary, to fascinating experiments ("One for My Baby") and filler like "Everyday We Rock and Roll" and "Merrily We Rock and Roll." He still rocks out, and sounds like he's having a great time playing blues with Bloomfield and Butterfield ("Sad Day-Long Night" etc.), sounding like an old Chicago bluesman, which, ironically, was the direction he chose to go in during his subsequent four-year stint with Mercury Records. He still does some straight rock & roll -- "It's My Own Business" is a great teen-rebellion number -- and the occasional indulgence of his taste for music from the islands ("Run Joe"), in what was essentially an era-closing album, and his last attempt at making a contemporary album with his established sound. Berry's next step was four years of neglect, followed by his rediscovery as an "oldies" act.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there, visible on BOTH sides (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel
