Electrifying debut and lone release from this American hard rocking prog band who began in Ohio and relocated to Southern California. CITADEL is now widely known as the band who opened the first Prog Fest ( '93), which is generally regarded as the shot-heard-'round-the-world that inspired the modern global prog festival movement. Harmony-rich male and female vocals, driving bass, a phalanx of guitars ( often including double-necks), and a wall of varied keyboards make up their sound, which takes a 70s prog influence in a very rocking direction. Solidly in an early RUSH type vein ( some of the songs really fit with a "Fly By Night" style), the band seems to take a page from "The Yes Album" through "Relayer" -era YES, expounding on the great keyboard-heavy, full prog band arrangement sound. Yet there is also an immediate accessibility to many of the songs, sort of like early KANSAS or STYX. Most tracks are rockers or prog pieces with a very active feel, but the one ballad, the beautiful "Stygian Barque," is haunting, etherial, and timeless in its approach. A concept lp about a lost race of "Dreamurz" on a struggling planet in a solar system far away, the album features all the musical elements and chops necessary to pull off such an elaborate concept. A solid American prog outing joining the ranks of great bands like ETHOS, STARCASTLE, and MACARTHUR, who never got their due acclaim; a lost indie U.S. prog classic all the way.
